HUANG Ciping, Invited Women's Rights Activist, to Appear at Voice of America (VOA) "Pro and Con" TV/Radio Debate Program Discussing Women's Right to Work

On January 27, 2006, HUANG Ciping appeared on VOA's "Pro and Con" TV/Radio debate program discussing the issue of whether mothers should stay home or work, as a women's rights activist and vice-president of the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars.

The program was hosted by Ning Xin.  The other guest joining the debate was Professor YUAN Cong, a visiting scholar from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During the debate, HUANG Ciping emphasized her stand on the question of whether women should stay in work force or return home as:

1) On the issue of whether mothers with children should work or stay at home, the woman should have the right to decide for herself.  It should be a personal decision, not one forced upon an individual by society.

2) Women who stay at home for long periods of time could become true dependents, both economically and emotionally.  In case of death or breakdown of the marriage, women will often be put in a difficult position both mentally and in their living conditions.  Starting afresh in finding work is also difficult.  So women with jobs may be better off in comparison.

3) Often an argument for staying at home is to educate the children.  One sign of social progress is the distribution of work in society, including education of children.  Even devoted stay-at-home-moms may not accomplish this task as well.

4) Most societies including the American (the government, companies, and organizations) have made improvements to help women's independence and equality to men.  Yet there are rooms for more progress.  However, in the current Chinese society, the women's environment is much more hostile and hazardous.  So keeping independent both financially and emotionally is more important than ever.
