The Hard Labor Shi Tao Has Been Forced to Perform

-- Exposing the Secret Truth of Jewelry Processing

by Chen Shaowen

Mr. Shi Tao has been and is still currently performing hard labor in the Crimson Mountain Jail (i.e. the Hunan Province No. 1 Jail) in Yuanjiang City in Hunan Province.  Crimson Mountain Island, on the misty Dongting Lake, can be said to have one of jails that hold the most political prisoners in China, which is also the darkest and most inhuman place in China.

Outside of having a few indigenous residents, Crimson Mountain Island is completely home to police officers and prisoners with heavy sentences who wear black-and-white striped uniforms and with shaved heads.  The complex is separated into nine jail sections, with Jail Section No. 1 as the Capital Construction Brigade.  Most of their work includes digging up bogs, pulling out sand from the lake, performing work on construction projects, and other high-exertion, high-danger labor.  This was the section I was in the most in my three years there.  Jail Section No. 2 is the "Hunan Electrical Machinery Factory", where they make Single-Phase, Three-Phase, and other types of electrical machinery.  Nearly all of the heavily sentenced prisoners there are gang leaders, murderers, and arsonists.  Jail Section No. 4 is the Hunan Construction Machinery Factory, where excavators, bulldozers, and other equipment are manufactured.  This is the place with the largest amount of detained Falun Gong "leaders."  One Falun Gong disciple named Jia Zefa, a quick-witted and brave man who had a legendary quality to him, mysteriously escaped on October 18, 2004.  Even today the Chinese Communist Party is searching for him.  This soul-stirring prison escape drama occurred in Jail Section No. 4.  Jail Sections No. 3, 5, and 7 are called the "Labor Service Corporation", with most prisoners.  These places have the highest number of detained Falun Gong disciples, members of the political elite, and democracy advocates.  The detainees of these three jail sections are forced to process handiwork such as knitted and weaved objects, jewels, bamboo mates, and holiday lanterns.

Since I worked in the Capitol Construction section, it was convenient for me to move around among the jails, and so I had a basic understanding of the jail production and activities and was basically able to contact the political elites, democracy advocates, and Falun Gong disciples.  I thus came to know this most dark, bloody, violent, and solemn situation like the palm of my hand.  Now, according to disclosures from overseas media and democracy elites from Hunan Province, Shi Tao, the former editor of the Hunan Business Daily, the famous poet and democracy elite, has been forced to perform hard labor as a member of the Labor Service Corporation, and has been put to work on the jewel production process.

The jewel processing work is distributed between Jail Sections No. 3 and 6, with a small number of people from Section No. 7 also working on it.  Since Shi Tao was put to Crimson Mountain after I left there on August 5 of last year, I'm not clear about which jail section he was assigned to.  Yet regardless of which jail section or squad he is in, he won't be able to escape that inhuman persecution, that barbaric oppression, and those horrific threats!

The entire production and activity sections of the Crimson Mountain Jail were built during the 1950s.  Thus, the buildings are extremely simple and crude, and the ventilation and lighting are both of extremely poor quality.  Moreover, the stink of having so many people there is overwhelming, the booming sounds of the machinery deafen the ears, and the struck-up dust that covers the sun causes the prisoners to live in a dark world, where they struggle in an abyss of suffering and torment.

In the pitch-black morning before the sun had come out, the strident and oppressive work bell would begin to toll throughout Crimson Mountain Island.  The reveille is for the five squads working for the Labor Service Corporation.  According to Stipulation No. 58 (Part of the "Criminal Living Standards" Promulgated by the Ministry of Justice), all criminals must wash and clean themselves up within five minutes and then assemble on the lawn.  If people want to understand what this is like, they can obtain from Mr. Xia Yan's "Indentured Servant" an understanding of prisoners' grief, helplessness, and misery!  The reality is even more shocking than the images of slaves that would prostitute themselves in that novel.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all eaten outside of the work shed.  Only 15 minutes are allotted for each meal, and outside of this time for eating, 12 hours are spent squatting in a dark world, listening to the whine of grindstones.  There is a small aqueduct by the workstations, as the fast-spinning adamantine grindstones rely on water for lubrication and cooling.  Prisoners hold a man-made grindstone, less than 5mm wide, and, under feeble light, carefully work to polish the gems.  They have to use this irregular grindstone to fashion six-sided, translucent, and standards-meeting jewels.  This work is highly difficult even in women's hands, not to mention those of hardened men.  This work is tantamount to destroying their bodies and souls, their spirit and confidence.  Thus, when ever I watched from afar as they let the prisoners out for exercises or to relieve themselves, the prisoners' eyes seemed to have lost all expression, their hands and feet shuffled around in an uncertain manner, they knew nothing of time and space, human language, warm and cool, or bright and dark.  Each person on the lawn either stood or squatted, silently passing those 15 minutes of rest time before they re-entered the cave of the man-eating beast.

Each prisoner has duties that they can't possibly complete, and so they could face bloody violence at any time.  First, the jail police have "three treasures" await each person: hemp cord, "thumb string", and high-voltage electric batons.  Then work committee members supervise the workers.  The "supervisors" also have their "three treasures": bamboo planks, fists, and bamboo shoulder poles.  The method of supervision is "using criminals to deal with criminals."  Under the instigation of the police, these criminals use extreme violence against their own kind and use bamboo planks to forcefully lash the older or sickly prisoners who are unable to fulfill their quotas, and use their bamboo shoulder poles to beat those young prisoners who dare to cry or shout.  After the beating, the prison guards take those who don't obey through a "class," using brutal tortures against people that - the less painful is by using "thumb strings" to hold their hands from behind and hang on the pillars, while the more severe one are having all the limbs tighten tightly.  For those who are tougher, they use several hundred thousands volts electric batons to shock them on their shins, private parts, and armpits, the most sensitive parts of the body!

Why aren't they able to finish the quotas stipulated by the "cadres"?  There are two reasons.  The first is that even though the jewelry work isn't that physically hard, it's mentally stressful, as it requires lots of concentration and dexterity, and those who perform these tasks are force to do so in an environment of deafening sounds, dust, and foul smells.  No matter how hard you work to finish today's assignments, you won't be able to finish tomorrow's, not to mention if you have to do the same task every day for years.  The second reason is that the "cadres", in order to making high profit themselves, have committed extremely evil deeds.  They raise the quotas daily, making them impossible to complete.  They force you to use your living expenses from your family for bribes to appease them.  If you give me some benefits, then today you can drink beer and be free today, and your duties will fall on someone else's shoulders.  But if you don't give me some money today, then you'll have to go back to work on the jewels tomorrow.  Day after day, year after year, the Party henchmen use the prisoners' blood and tears for their own power!

Mr. Shi Tao is a part of this terrible situation, and could be destroyed by the state apparatus just like Mr. Yu Dongyue was.  I don't know, and neither does he!
