The 17th anniversary of the June 4 massacre in Beijing is approaching.  Along with other co-sponsoring organizations, the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars in the US (IFCSS) will organize a candle light vigil in the US capital, Washington, DC, USA.  The time is from 7pm to 9pm on Saturday, June 3, 2006.  The place is in front of the Chinese embassy to the USA, located at 2300 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC, USA.

The event will include speeches and activities with former student leaders during the 1989 Democracy Movement, well-known dissidents, and leaders of the Chinese community.

During the candle light vigil, the IFCSS will announce the winners for this year's "Spirit of Freedom Award".  The purpose of this award is to salute those Chinese who do not surrender themselves to dictatorship, maintain independent thinking and dignity, and display a free spirit and human conscience.  The past awardees include Mr. SONG ZhongQiu, who despite suffering terminal cancer still criticized Chinese Communism; Mr. HU ShiGen, who organized the Chinese Freedom and Democracy Party in 1991 shortly after the June 4 massacre in Beijing; and Mr. JIANG QiSheng, one of the leaders of the 1989 democracy movement who has continued his effort to push for democracy in China.

The candle light vigil this year marks the 17th continuous year that the IFCSS, along with other organizations and communities, has held memorial services in Washington DC since 1989.  We believe this annual event is not just a memorial to the martyrs of the June 4 massacre who sacrificed their lives for Chinese democracy, but more as the expression of our firm belief in and effort to achieve freedom and democracy in China.  The IFCSS is calling to the Chinese students and scholars all over the USA, especially those who have experienced and participated in the democracy movement in 1989, to actively participate in local June 4 memorial activities.
