Wei Jingsheng:  Germany Is Leading a Change in Europe's Policy on China

Special Dispatch from Central News Agency Reporter Lin Yuli in Berlin

May 17, 2006

Well-known democracy leader Wei Jingsheng accepted a special interview from the Central News Agency.  He said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is on her way to visit China, is guiding Europe's policy on China, moving from how it originally only paid heed to economic matters to now showing concern for human rights and democracy, both democracy advocates (of Mainland China) and the Taiwan government should strengthen relations with Europe and help them to learn the real situation in China and Cross-Strait.  Wei Jingsheng said that during previous Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schroeder's terms, German policy towards China put economic interests foremost, but the recently elected Angela Merkel has shown concern for the advance of human rights and democracy in China.  She took the lead in opposing an end to the European Union's arms embargo on China, and has successfully guided Europe's policy towards China.

Wei Jingsheng pointed out that over the last few years, China focused most of its foreign policy energies on having the E.U.'s arms embargo ban lifted, but even after giving out so much money in contracts, it still didn't succeed in the end.  After visiting Europe last year, Hu Jintao decided to wholeheartedly shift his foreign policy focus to America, and to concentrate his limited bargaining chips there.  Wei said that democracy advocates and Taiwan should take this opportunity to strengthen their relationship with Europe.

During his theme speech at the Berlin "Conference for the Global Support of Democratization in China and Asia," Wei spoke about China's current situation and the prospects for democratization there, and was the subject to be interviewed by important news media such as " Süddeutsche Zeitung".

Chancellors Angela Merkel, along with Michael Gloss, German Economics Minister, will travel to China with a business delegation on May 20.  This is her first time visiting China since taking the post last November.
