On December 5, 2005, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation decided to award a special award for Mr. YU Dongyue as its second Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize".

Since then, there has been overwhelming international attention and outcry concerning the condition and well being of Mr. Yu Dongyue, who was finally released on February 22, 2006. However, this important figure during the 1989 democracy movement in China has lost his mind and even the ability to take care of himself or recognize his own parents after 16 years of imprisonment and abuse.
Mr. YU Dongyue is from Liuyang in Hunan Province. He was born in 1967, and graduated from the Chinese Department of the Xiangtan Junior Pedagogical College. In 1989 he was the Arts Editor of the "Liuyang Daily." During the June 4th period in 1989, he went to Tiananmen Square with Yu Zhijian and Lu Decheng and hung up two banners there. One banner said, "5,000 Years of Autocracy Will Now Reach an End," and the other said, "From Now On, the Personality Cult Must Come to an Stop." They then threw paint-filled eggs at the huge portrait of Mao Zedong that hangs in Tiananmen Square. After Yu Dongyue and his best friends Yu ZhiJian and Lu DeCheng were seized and sent to the Public Security Bureau, they were sentenced for "Counter-Revolutionary Crimes of Damage and Crimes of Propagating Incitement." Yu Dongyue was sentenced to 20 years in jail. Not long after he was sent to jail he was driven to insanity.
Despite the outpouring sympathy and caring, the effort to help Mr. Yu has not been well organized. Exactly due to this concern, at the beginning of this year Mr. Yu's parents (Mr. Yu YingKui and Ms. Wu PingHua) and best friends (Mr. Yu ZhiJian and Mr. Lu DeCheng) entrusted the Wei Jingsheng Foundation to establish a "Yu Dongyue Support Group". This foundation received the entrusting letter in March and is extremely honored to play such a role. However, we want to apologize to our friends and supporters who have made similar inquiries in the past for being late to release this letter because of our concern for the safety of related individuals, as well as carrying out consultations with various people including Mr. Yu DongYue's best friend, Mr. Lu DeCheng, who himself just made it to the safety of North America two months ago. During Mr. Lu DeCheng's short visit to Washington, DC, we briefed him on the situation and listened to his suggestions as well.
As of now, the plaque and the award money of $2,000.00 (in US dollars) for Yu DongYue's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" has arrived, and was a great help to him as he had just left jail and was in urgent need. Hereby, we ask friends and the public to pitch in to help Mr. Yu DongYue in his recovery.
In the long run, we are also interested in seeking the possibility of having doctors go to China to check on Mr. Yu's condition and study the possibilities of recovery, as well the possibility of taking him to a country that has better medical facilities and a public welfare system. As the family members of Yu DongYue, we are extremely pleased. It is his fortune and honor to have so many friends overseas care about him and help him. Hereby, we express our sublime respect and heartfelt gratefulness to your foundation!
Meanwhile, we are asking XXX (deleted for identity protection) to represent Yu Dongyue to receive his award plaque and award money.
In an effort to continue succor for Yu Dongyue in a systematic manner, we are pleading to your foundation to take the lead in organizing a "Yu DongYue Support Group", details will be attached and might be discussed with XXX. From this point on, all matters related to the "Yu DongYue Support Group" and the latest news about Yu Dongyue himself distributed to the news media will only be valid when they are signed and released by the "Wei Jingsheng Foundation".

自此之后，我们受到了众多的国际关注与声援。在经历了16年的牢狱之灾后，喻东岳终于在2006年2月被释放回家。然而，多年的虐待已经将他变成了另一个人，一个连自己的父母都分不清的人。
喻东岳，男，湖南浏阳人。生于1967年。毕业于湘潭师专中文系。1989年任《浏阳日报》美术编辑。1989年六四期间，他和余志坚、鲁德成三人一起，在天安门广场挂起了两幅标语，一幅是“五千年专制从此告一段落”，一幅是“个人崇拜从今可以休矣”，然后用带有颜料的鸡蛋涂抹在悬挂在天安门城楼上的毛泽东巨幅画像上。喻东岳等三人被扭送到公安局以后，分别因“反革命破坏罪和宣传煽动罪”被判处徒刑。喻东岳被判20年徒刑。入狱以后不久被逼成疯。
尽管有众多的国际关怀，对喻东岳的帮助并没有能系统化。为此，今年年初，喻东岳的亲友（父亲：喻英葵；母亲：吴平花；好友：余志坚）委托魏京生基金会成立“喻东岳后援会”（本基金会于2006年3月收到委托书的原件）。由于对有关人员安全，不断地商讨及其他因素的考量，本基金会未能就有关的询问及时所出答复，仅此一并作为解释并致歉。在喻东岳的好友鲁德成先生短暂停留华盛顿的期间，我们也就有关事项给了他一个简单的介绍，并听取了他的意见。
目前，本基金会授予喻东岳先生的两千美元奖金与奖牌已顺利抵达。相信对刚出狱的他起着很好的帮助。在此，我们也请求朋友们能慷慨解囊，尽力帮助喻东岳先生早日康复。
目前已有一些帮助喻东岳的长期性的想法，比如请国际上有威望的医生去看望喻东岳，并予以诊断与治疗。更近一步的想法是将他接到一个西方福利比较好的国家予以治疗。望大家能群策群力，共同帮助他。
魏京生基金会是一个在美国注册，并享有联邦政府的免税优惠的非营利机构。我们会很高兴地为您的捐款提供一个可以用于免税的证明。请您在给喻东岳先生的捐款上注明，以便我们专款专用。我们会就有关喻东岳的捐款基金向捐款人提供最新的报告。
