-- Ciping HUANG's Speech at the DC Rally to Urge the Immediate Release of Gao ZhiSheng
In the afternoon of August 19, 2006, many human rights lawyers, China study experts and the overseas Chinese democracy advocators hold a rally at the foot of the US Capitol in Washington DC, urging the immediate release of the human rights lawyer, Mr. Gao ZhiSheng.
The Wei Jingsheng Foundation co-sponsored the event with Global Service for Quitting CCP and Future China Forum. As Mr. Wei Jingsheng himself is traveling abroad, Ciping HUANG, the Executive Director was in the rally and delivered a speech on behalf of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation. The following is her speech.

Support GAO ZhiSheng, Support CHEN GuangCheng, Support Chinese Human Rights
On August 15, 2006, human rights defending lawyer Gao ZhiSheng was secretly taken by Chinese police while attending to his critically ill brother-in-law.
Lawyer Gao is the frontrunner of the recent wave of the Chinese human rights defending movement. His detention reveals a truth of the human rights abuse inside China: that a lawyer defending others will have a hard time even to defend himself. After the "law on lawyers" was passed in China, five hundred Chinese lawyers were detained.
Meanwhile, a blind human rights defender Chen GuangCheng in Shandong Province was put on trial in court. As the call for help reached out to other human rights lawyers, professors and scholars all over China, dozens of people rushed to Shandong to rally behind him. Yet, before they even reached the court, they were encountered by more than one hundred of fully equipped police and secret police. As court opened, these lawyers were already put under house arrest, with some lawyers and professors detained on the accusation of "pocket lifting", a favorite trick by the Chinese government nowadays. At the court, there were only two temporally "court assigned lawyers" who answered "no objections" to all the questions, including any knowledge of Chen's case.
From here, once again, we see the truth that, for these human rights lawyers, there are no human rights even for themselves. And we see the blind Chinese legal system manipulated by the Chinese government as a tool to against human rights and humanity, even against a blind person who has the courage and wisdom of light to help the others.
I am here, on behalf of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, calling for the immediately release of Lawyer GAO ZhiSheng, Mr. CHEN GuangCheng, and all the other human rights defenders. We are here to call for the awareness and support of international society and your American people to the Chinese human rights abuses, especially the continued suppression against the political dissidents, underground church members and FaLun Gong practitioners.
What is remarkable to Lawyer Gao is the fact that, despite himself being a Christian, he has been the most well known lawyer defending the rights of FaLun Gong practitioners inside China. Being one of the groups most suppressed by Chinese leaders with policy of "those who deserve to be beaten to death", even association with the group could bring catastrophe, not to mention defending their rights. Yet, Lawyer Gao would take their cases, against the will of the Chinese government. So the detention of Lawyer Gao is not just against himself, but also against the people he represented, against the Falun Gong practitioners, against all those who are under-privileged and abused by the Chinese government. I am please to see people here; especially the Falun Gong practitioners are here to rally in support of Lawyer Gao. We must unite together, and to support each other.
Looking at the life of Lawyer Gao, we at the Wei Jingsheng Foundation felt especially moved. As an organization promoting Chinese workers' rights, we always keep a close eye on people like him, who have been effectively defending workers' rights, as well as these of immigrant peasant workers.
Growing up in poverty and was exploited his rights for education, Lawyer Gao learnt by himself despite his endless hard labor work as a teenager to live and to support his widowed mother and younger brothers. Once, he had to work in the coalmines for little wage with his younger brother and witnessed many tragedy unfold. We all know that the coal industry is one of the most dangerous and exploited fields in China that results deaths of thousands each year.
Nevertheless, it is this kind of hardship that made him braver and determined. It is this kind of experience that brought him more sense of caring and eagerness to help others. And most importantly, it is his full understanding of the dictatorial nature of the Communist government that supports his determination to defend human rights and thus have calmness in the face of danger.
Since last year, Lawyer Gao has been under consistent monitoring and disturbance, even beating by the police. He has been on a regular hunger strike since last February, as have hundreds of people all over the world followed in support of his righteous stand. Now, we are facing another time to unite together behind him. Here, we come together to plea for everyone's help and international attention. But most important of all, we come together to vow our own determination to stand together with Lawyer Gao, to end the human rights abuses to our fellow Chinese inside China. We call for the end of suppression of the political dissidents, the democracy advocators, the underground Christians, and FaLun Gong practitioners. We shall speak as a whole. We shall act together as one.
We are here also calling for the attention of Mr. Chen GuangCheng, who has defended the rights of more people than most others, including the unborn children. Under the cruelty of Chinese government's one-child policy, matured fetus are even aborted and killed. Mr. Chen did a very thorough study of the forced abortion and forced sterilization in the area where he lives, and thus offended the local authority and the Chinese government. Here we are talking about "weight of one brave man worth more than one hundred", as the old Chinese saying. Not only the Chinese government sent over one hundred police to prevent others who support him, they even have to put more than 30 blind people who supported Mr. Chen under house arrest.
We must realize that to put Mr. Chen on trial, is to put these unborn children, their mothers and families on trial. But Mr. Chen's case also sheds light and opportunity to something more. It is now for us to put the inhuman abortion policy of the Chinese government on trial. It is now for international society to pay attention and to get involved in, not just for people we see here, people we know, but also these innocent lives of unborn babies.

8月19日下午，美国首都华盛顿多名人权律师、中国问题专家、海外民主人士等社会各界在国会山集会，要求立即释放8月15日被中共当局抓捕的维权律师高智晟。魏京生基金会与全球退党服务中心及未来中国论坛共同举办了这次活动。黄慈萍女士代表魏京生基金会作了以下的发言。

声援高智晟、陈光诚，声援中国的人权
2006年8 月15日，著名维权律师高智晟在探访病危的姐夫时被官方警察秘密带走。
高智晟律师是近年来中国人权运动中站在最前列的律师。中共对他的拘捕显示出在中国大陆人权迫害的真实情况：一名为他人辩护的律师甚至都很难为自己辩护。律师法实施以来, 中国已有五百名律师被捕。
同时，山东著名人权捍卫者，盲人陈光诚先生也将受审。当来自全国各地的几十名人权人士包括律师、教授和学者前往山东声援陈光诚时，他们所遭遇的是上百名全副武装的警察和秘密警察。更有甚者，就在开庭前夕，营救陈光诚律师团的主要成员之一、北京邮电大学法学讲师许志勇博士等突然被警方以涉嫌盗窃罪拘留 -- 一个当今中国政府惯用的伎俩与罪名。在法庭上，只有两个"临时指定的律师"对所有的提问表示“没有意见”，并承认对陈案本身一无所知。
从这些现状中，我们再次看到，连中国的人权律师都没有他们自身的人权可讲的真相。我们也看到中国政府如何操纵虚构的中国法律系统，用之来对抗人权和尊严，甚至用之来对付一个盲人，一个具有勇气和智慧来帮助别人的人。
在这里，我代表魏京生基金会，呼吁立即释放高智晟律师和陈光诚先生，以及所有被囚禁的人权律师和斗士。我们呼吁国际社会以及美国人民关注和支持中国的人权状况，特别关注那些被持续不断地迫害者的持不同政见者，以及地下教会成员、和法轮功学员。
高律师的杰出之处在于，尽管他自己是基督徒，他一直是最著名的为国内法轮功成员做辩护的律师。在中共"打死白打死"的政策下，普通的人即便和法轮功学员有联系，都足以带来灾难，更不要说为他们辩护。但是高律师却直接对抗中共的意愿，为法轮功学员辩护。所以说，拘捕高律师，不仅是对高律师本人的迫害，也是对法轮功成员的迫害，对他所代表的弱势群体的迫害，对中国人民的迫害。
高律师的事迹，让我们魏京生基金会的成员非常感动。以推动中国工人权益为己任，我们一贯密切关注那些有效维护工人权益以及农民工权益的人们。高律师是其中之一。
在贫困地区成长，被剥夺了教育权利的高律师，在青少年期的艰苦劳动中自学成才，同时还要抚养寡母和幼小的兄弟。他曾经和未成年的弟弟一起，以低微工薪在矿山做工，有时候甚至拿不到工资。我们知道，煤矿开采是中国最危险的劳动环境，每年都有数千矿工死于矿难。
然而，这种艰苦经历造就了他的勇敢和坚定。过去亲身经历的苦难使他在帮助他人时，具有更多的同情和理解。更重要的是，对中共当局独裁性质的全面认识，让他更坚定地捍卫人权，更平静地面对危险。
去年以来，高律师一直处在警察的骚扰和监视下。他为此进行了几个月的定时绝食抗议，世界各地有几百人陪伴他绝食以示对他正义立场的支持。现在，我们正在面临又一个与他团结一致的时刻。在此，我们恳求每一个人的声援，恳求国际的关注。最重要的是，我们要利用这个机会走到一起来，表达我们对高律师的支持，表达我们要中止中国政府对中国人民人权践踏的决心。我们为持不同政见者呼吁，为民主运动积极分子呼吁，为地下教会呼吁，也为法论功成员呼吁。我们异口同声，我们同仇敌忾。
这里我们也为陈光诚先生呼吁。他所维护的生命超过他人 -- 他还为未出生的孩子辩护。在中共政府残酷的"计划生育政策"下，发育成熟的胎儿也会被强行流产和杀害。陈律师对他所在地区的强行节育与强行流产做过全面的调查研究，因此得罪了当地官员，得罪了中国政府。
审判陈律师，是审判那些被扼杀的孩子，审判他们的母亲，审判他们的家庭。然而，陈光诚的审判，也带来了一线光亮--将中国政府无人性的“计划生育政策”予以审判。现在是国际社会予以关注与参与的时刻 -- 不仅仅是为了我们，也是为了那些被无辜扼杀的生命。
