The Adviser for China's Democracy Wei Jingsheng Visits Japan and Talks about North Korea's Kidnapping and Nuclear Test

(The Sankei Shimbun news, October 27, 2006)The adviser for China's democracy in opposition to the current Chinese Communist system, Wei Jingsheng (age 56) received an interview from the headquarters of the Sankei Shimbun in Tokyo's Chiyoda-Ku.   Regarding the kidnapping by North Korea of Japanese and South Koreans, he said: "18 years of freedom was taken from me as well.  Kidnapping is not forgivable and the truth must be investigated."

Mr. Wei's opinion about the current human rights situation in China is that: "Since Hu Jintao took over the power, the situation has worsened in comparison to the 1980's. The control of the press has intensified.  The reason is probably due to the fear psychology of Hu Jintao who is worried about his ability to keep his power.

Currently using the US capital Washington DC as his activity center to realize the democratization of China, Mr. Wei said that (he has) "an extensive democracy network within China; many Chinese citizens provide us various means of support including providing various information to us.  With the quick development of the Internet, the activities are able to be passed out in a timely manner, which accelerates the development of the democracy process.

On another aspect, Mr. Wei analyzed the nuclear test of North Korea.  Needless to say,  North Korea is treating the USA as an important target, while holding Japan and South Korea as the threatened hostage.  The kidnapping issue could produce the same fear to the Japanese.

The background of this nuclear test is that "in the last a few years, North Korea has been isolated internationally, while having visible and invisible forms of support from China.  This combination is the reason that North Korea made its threat internationally."

China could be considered as the only country that could have a big influence on North Korea.  By persuading North Korea, it could raise the international and diplomatic status 0f China.  This is the real purpose of China.

China's negotiation attitude is "only the action on the surface.  When it comes to the real time for sanctions it appears to be hesitating, which really means it stands  against a sanction."

Wei Jingsheng was born in Beijing in 1950.  In 1978, he participated the democracy movement that is called the "Beijing Spring".  The second year, he was arrested until released on parole in 1993.  During this time, he wrote his "Courage to Stand Alone -- Letters from Prison".  In Europe, America and Hong Kong, there was a movement calling for his release.  He was arrested again in 1994.  After his parole in 1997, he was sent to exile to the USA.  He continued his democracy activities by maintain his activity centers in the USA and Europe.
