Wei Jingsheng Meet with New US Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, David Kramer

On the morning of April 17, 2008, 11:30am, the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition WEI Jingsheng, and secretary-general of the Coalition HUANG Ciping, visited the US State Department and met with the newly sworn in Assistant Secretary of the State for Human Rights, Democracy and Labor Bureau, Mr. David Kramer, for almost one hour.  Other state department officials including bureau’s senior advisor Susan O'Sullivan were also present.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Kramer expressed his respect to Mr. Wei for his years of effort for human rights and democracy.  He also expressed honor to have the conversation with Mr. Wei.  The meeting went in depth regarding Chinese human rights issues, as well as the issue of Tibet.  Both sides agreed that a true and direct dialogue between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama is the best way to resolve the current crisis.  Assistant Secretary Kramer also emphasized that such a dialogue has been the policy of the American government.  This policy also fits the interest of the Chinese government.  Both sides exchanged their thoughts on some technical details.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Kramer also informed Mr. Wei of a new development: in May, he will bring a team to Beijing as an effort resuming the human rights dialogue between China and USA, which was suspended.  Mr. Wei expressed his hope that the dialogue will produce valuable fruit, instead of falling into the meaningless facial result as in the past.

Finally, both sides agreed to keep close communications during this period and exchange information more regularly, to cooperate with each other in an effort to improve human rights situation in China and in Tibet.
