Wei Jingsheng on Chinese Rights Defense: Peaceful Evolution or People's Violence after the Olympics (at the "Chinese Rights Defense and Overseas Democracy Movement" Seminar in Paris)

(August 18 by the Epoch Times' Zhang ZiChun Reports from Paris) On August 16, 2008, from 14:00 to 18:00, the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the Chinese Democratic Front held a joint seminar at the conference room of Hotel Mercure in Paris. The topic of the seminar was "Chinese Rights Defense and the Overseas Democracy Movement".  The well-known Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng made a special trip from the USA to Paris to attend this seminar.  He delivered his speech on the subject, as well as answered various questions from the audience presented, as well as over a thousand Internet audiences inside of China.

When Wei Jingsheng received this reporter's interview, he talked about two possibilities for the Chinese rights defending movement.  One is a positive and peaceful evolution of the movement.  The other is a violent struggle when the people cannot tolerate anymore.  He said: "I think that there are two tendencies for the Chinese democratic and rights defending movement after the Olympics in Beijing.  One is that the Chinese Communist Party loosens up politically, in particular in freedom of speech.  This way, the rights defending movement could be developed into a very normal and positive mass movement, and thus gradually push China to democracy, especially able to protect people's real interests.  As a matter of fact, that is a pressure-releasing valve, which could prevent social conflicts from explosion and gradually allow them to be solved.  A peaceful development like this would be beneficial to all the Chinese.

Wei Jingsheng further analyzed: "On the other side, and a possibility that has become more and more likely, is that many Chinese have lost their patience and cannot tolerate anymore.  Especially for these who could not even make a living, they can only take a violent measure.  We do not agree with violence, but many people are doing so anyway.  That means that, due to the concentrated suppression during the Beijing Olympics, the Chinese people are gradually leaning towards a violent revolution after the Olympics.

Wei Jingsheng pointed out that this tendency of violent revolution by the people under the Chinese Communist suppression is likely to bring problems and losses to the society.  He said: "This is a very serious test for the rights defending movement, as well as a severe test for the Chinese Communist Party.  Under the rebellion of the people, the Communist Party will find it hard to maintain its rule.  A violent revolution could also bring a lot of problems for China, including many losses for the society, politically, culturally, etc.  However, if the Chinese Communist Party does not loosen up its control, then likely China will move towards violent revolution.  These are the two tendencies.

Finally, Wei Jingsheng analyzed how the Chinese Communist Party employed measures to attack and suppress some people and pushed the people toward violent opposition.  He said: "The Chinese Communist Party wants to use the Beijing Olympics to push for a new round of dictatorship to go backwards.  It used a lot of excuses, which could be accepted internationally, such as the term 'terrorists'.  From XinJiang to Tibet, to Falun Gong, to the democracy movement, all are called as 'terrorists' by the Chinese Communist Party.  By doing so, it is much more legitimate for them to suppress the people, while the Western society has a harder time to react.  As a matter of fact, their approach did not really bring stability to China, and it is impossible for them to bring stability after all, because what they did could only make the people lose hope for peaceful evolution.  When the Communist Party makes people lose their hope, it really means pushing this society to a violent revolution.  I think this is a very stupid approach.  But the Communist Party thinks itself as very smart.  So this is a very dangerous development tendency."

Other people who also spoke at this seminar included the chairwoman of Association Solidarité Chine, Marie HOLZMAN; legal expert from Germany, Dr. QIAN YueJun; Director of China Labour Bulletin, CAI Chongguo, and also Uyghur rights defenders from Germany, etc.  There were several dozens of people participated in this seminar, both Chinese and non-Chinese.

The seminar organizers also employed Internet technology and broadcast the seminar live to thousands of people inside China.  During the seminar, these Internet users inside China were able to listen and ask questions live, regarding issues related to the social and future development of China.
