Hillary Clinton Was Challenged, Washington Paying Attention on Chinese Human Rights

[Reported by Yi Ping of the Epoch Times in Washington DC] Around noon of Feb. 26, 2009, four senior members of the US Congress and members of human rights organizations hold a press conference on the terrace of Cannon House Office Building.  They refute the new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's words waken human rights during her first foreign visit, and expressed their concerns over the continuously deteriorating Chinese human rights condition.  Several Congressional members expressed that they will stand together with the Chinese people and try all they can to urge the Obama administration to appeal for the suppressed Chinese people.

The day earlier on February 25, 2009, the US State Department published its 2008 human rights report which stated that Chinese human rights condition has been deteriorated continuously.

GOP Conference Chairman Mike Pence (IN-6th), Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4th), Congressmen Frank Wolf (VA-10th) and Joe Pitts (PA-16th) attended the press conference on Thursday.

Rep. Smith said that "In a sad irony, within days of the Secretary's airy dismissal of human rights, the Department of State issued its Congressionally-mandated annual Country Reports on Human Rights, which concluded that in 2008 the Chinese government's human rights record "worsened"."

He said: "Every day, brave Chinese risk their lives and liberty in the pursuit of freedom, democracy, protection of the family and respect per human rights. As we speak, Chinese political prisoners languish in gulags - laogai concentration camps - facing unspeakable torture and abuse. As a matter of a fact, approximately half a million each day endure the cruelty and humiliation of the labor camp."

He expressed that: "Congressmen Pence, Wolf, and Pitts have joined me to deliver a message to the Chinese people:  there are many of us in Congress who will not let the United States government forget about their human rights; we will keep speaking out for them; and we will do everything in our power to urge the administration to do the same."

GOP Conference chairman Mike Pence said: "The United States has a responsibility to speak truth to power, and to speak with one voice that these actions are unacceptable. We must not allow our economic challenges to undermine our moral courage. I call upon Secretary Clinton and President Obama to renew our nation's longstanding commitment to personal and political freedom for the people of China, and to prevent our economic interests from clouding our moral responsibilities."

Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf said that the human rights report published by the State Department pointed out that the Chinese government systematically persecutes people, yet this top diplomat of the USA did not even apply pressure to the Chinese government in public.  Such a huge contrast is hardly to be believed.  Rep. Wolf urges to regain the human rights standard of the USA.

Pennsylvania Congressman Joe Pitts pointed out that one should not ignore the importance of the international human rights just because that the USA is in economic recession.  He urged Secretary Clinton to emphasize the importance of human rights when the US is dealing diplomatically with other countries, especially China, in an effort to repair the loss caused by her speeches.

Wei Jingsheng, president of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation; Bob Fu, president of China Aid; Sharon Hom, executive director of Human Rights in China and human rights activists for the Tibetans and Uyghurs have also expressed their concerns over the continuously deteriorated Chinese human rights condition during the press conference.

Wei Jingsheng thinks that Chinese human rights have directly relationship with America's economy.  He said: "Ever since President Bill Clinton de-linked Chinese human rights with trade, America's trade deficit and America's unemployment went up yearly while China's human rights deteriorated.  As a matter of fact, the rights of workers, the rights of the business world, and a free press are the three human rights issues that are the essential conditions for fair trade.  Without these conditions, of course the trade between the USA and China will not be fair."

Wei Jingsheng said: "Thus, regardless either you care about human rights in China, or human rights in America, or economy in America, you should care about human rights in China."  He appealed the Obama administration to urge Secretary Clinton to change the wrongful foreign diplomacy of "ignoring human rights".
