Wei Jingsheng Attends Artist Shan Shan Wei-Blank’s Exhibition, Two Worlds – China and Germany ("Zwei Welten - China und Deutschland"), in Hamburg, Germany

[The Epoch Times June 10 news, by reporter Liu Min in Hamburg, Germany]  On June 5 the town of Wedel, which is just next to the wealthy district of Blankenese on the north bank of Elbe River, held its second Cultural Festival.  An opening ceremony for the art exhibition by Shan Shan Wei-Blank, a Chinese artist in Germany, was held in the city hall of Wedel at 6pm as a main program within the festival.

The chair for the Cultural Forum of Wedel Ms. Dohmen, the official in charge of Wedel’s Cultural Bureau Mr. Wassman (Waßman),  the head of Hamburg’s AIDA (Internationale Vereinigung zur Verteidigung verfolgter Künstler überall auf der Welt/Association internationale de défense des artistes de la répression dans le monde) Mr. Schildt, the head of Greenpeace, and the elder brother of Shan Shan WEI-BLANK, the well-known human rights activist WEI Jingsheng, spoke at the opening ceremony.

Ms. Dohmen said that when she learned that the Wedel Cultural Festival meant to find an artist for the art exhibition in the city hall, she immediately thought of Shan Shan Wei-Blank.  Between 1991 and 1997, Wei-Blank had her own art gallery in Blankenese.  Ms. Dohmen remembered that Wei-Blank sold a lot of her paintings, which was not easy.

“When I showed her paintings to the other organizers, everyone agreed that she was the most suitable person.  Her paintings have their own characteristics, both modern and classic.  Her watercolors and oil paintings have strong characteristics of Chinese ink paintings.  She does well in landscaping paintings with good decorative effects, yet does not try to avoid political topics.  She is a very good annotation for the main theme of this cultural festival: “nature, homeland, culture, and the people.”

Wei Jingsheng told the audience about his sister in his speech.  In 1997, in an effort to rescue WEI Jingsheng, Shan Shan WEI-BLANK had to close her successful gallery as she ran all over the world while holding her infant son.  Later, as the elder brother got his freedom, she lost her own opportunity to have her own gallery.

Shan Shan Wei-Blank liked to paint since her childhood.  She was the last disciple of the well-known artist Huang Zhou.  After the Cultural Revolution, she excelled to be admitted into Beijing’s “Central Academy of Arts and Crafts” when thousands students would compete for one admission.

Wei Jingsheng said: “Now, finally, she has this opportunity to hold her own art exhibition.  I am happy for her.  In particular, I really like her several paintings of political topics.  I think artists should reflect the reality of the society, especially an autocratic society like China.  When your compatriots are suffering, how could you pretend not seeing it if you have a conscience?”

The portrait of Wei Jingsheng’s self defense in court in 1979 by Shan Shan Wei-Blank received an extreme response from the audience.  In particular people were shocked to learn that Wei Jingsheng received a sentence of more than one decade in jail for asking for “the fifth modernization” – democracy.

The art exhibition was held by the Wedel cultural groups and businesses.  More than 100 people, including the mayor of Wedel, various cultural groups, and people from all walks of life attended the opening ceremony.  Germany’s national television ARD (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – "Consortium of public-law broadcasting institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany") interviewed Shan Shan WEI-BLANK and WEI Jingsheng before the opening ceremony.

Shan Shan Wei-Blank’s art will be exhibited from June 5 to July 9.  Two landscaping paintings were already marked with “sold” signs at the opening ceremony.
