Wei Jingsheng Foundation Holds Conferences

- reported by Radio Free Asia

2010-09-28

The Wei Jingsheng Foundation in the United States organized a conference on Monday in the United States Capitol.  The conference was about sixty-one years of Chinese Communist Party regime, as well as being a press conference for its newly translated book "Lessons in Democracy".  Many representatives for the overseas democracy movement and human rights organizations attended and deliver their speeches.  Here is a report by Radio Free Asia reporter Shi Shan.

The conference was sponsored by 15 other overseas organizations besides the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.  Among others were Tibetan, Mongolian, and Uyghur organizations, as well as the Chinese Democratic Party, the Chinese Freedom and Democracy Party, the League of Chinese Victims, the Free China Movement Foundation, and other overseas democratic organizations from Vietnam, etc.

Wei Jingsheng, the famous Chinese political dissident who has been in exile in the U.S. for years, said that as the world's last bastion of communism, the Chinese Communist regime not only brought suffering to the Chinese people, but also brought disaster to the world.

"From all aspects, the Chinese Communist Party is not just destroying China, but also destroying the whole world.  We are all striving arduously in promoting the democratic movement in an effort to change this reality about China.  As a matter of fact, changing China is not just something the Chinese people should do, but also a thing that people around the world should do. "

The author of "Lessons in Democracy", Roland Watson, has been engaged in activities to promote democracy around the world.  He initially wrote "Lessons in Democracy" in English while he was helping to promote democracy in Burma.  It has been translated into four languages, and the Chinese translation is the fifth.  He said that the purpose is to promote democracy in the world, instead of forcing people to accept democracy.

"Well-known American President John F. Kennedy, said that you can not force people to desire freedom and democracy. You can't tell people what they should want. They - we - have to decide for ourselves."  For people who live in dictatorships like China and Burma to want democracy, to understand how living under a democratic government would improve their lives, they have to learn about it.

The Chinese version of "Lessons in Democracy" was translated by Ms. Ciping Huang, the executive director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.  This book has four parts and 20 lessons total, which introduces the principle of a democratic system and its characteristics of operation.  Ciping Huang said that a democratic system is not just simple voting, but also contains a lot of other elements including the people's own responsibilities and their commitment to the society.

In addition to introducing this new book "Lessons in Democracy", the seminar also discussed China's current situation.  Karma Namgyal, the Chair of the Tibetan Dhokham Chushi Gandruk (USA), talked about the Chinese Communist Party's Half Century of policies against Tibetans.  He believes that the democratization of China will help resolve the Tibet issue, so both the Han Chinese and Tibetans should work together.

Chinese Freedom and Democracy Party chairman Ni Yuxian analyzed the recent political reform voices within the Communist Party.   He thinks that the Chinese people should not hold illusions about the CCP's political reforms.

Also, the person in charge of the Global Service Center for Quitting the CCP, Li Dayong, introduced the movement of quitting the Communist Party, quitting the Youth League and quitting the Young Pioneer movement in China in the recent years.

Later, representatives of democratic organizations from Vietnam, Burma, and China had discussions in a seminar about Asia democratic issues, as well as reaching a consensus for a fuller and closer cooperation between people of different countries and different nationalities.
