Wei Jingsheng Invited to New York to Celebrate Tibetan Democracy Day and to Speak to the Tibetans at a Symposium about Democracy

On September 2, 2011, there was a grand festival to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the establishment of democracy of the Tibetan government-in-exile at Dharamsala, India.  The next day in the Western Hemisphere in New York, Tibetans also held a grand celebration for this occasion.  Wei Jingsheng was invited to participate in this celebration, and was an honored guest to speak at the symposium "Democracy: a goal as well as a means".

Wei Jingsheng said in his speech that the Tibetan exile community built a democratic system in the past half century with the support of his Holiness the Dalai Lama.  It is a shining example for all the Tibetans, as well as pointing out a direction for social progress in the Tibetan society.  Most of the Han Chinese do not know this.  These Han Chinese would be very envious of the Tibetans if they learned of it.

In his speech, Mr. Wei Jingsheng also pointed out that now the Dalai Lama has announced his retirement and has completely retreated away from politics.  This retirement is not only an opportunity for democracy building for the Tibetans, but also means greater responsibility.  The Tibetan people must learn to make political decisions and other important matters via democratic procedures, learn to avoid mistakes, and correctly lead all Tibetans in the fight for rights that they deserve.

Mr. Wei believes that democracy in the Tibetan exile community will inspire the Tibetans in Tibet to fight for their democratic rights, thus and become the banner of social progress in Tibet.

A Tibetan leader asked: In Tibet, we have neither independence nor democracy; but here overseas, we are both independent and enjoy democracy.  Do we need to negotiate with the Chinese Communist Party, so that they will allow us to return to Tibet to strive for independence and democracy?  Is this meaningful?

Mr. Wei thinks that the Chinese Communist Party is not trustworthy, and will not allow Tibetans to go back and fight for independence and democracy.  It would be more meaningful for the Tibetans in exile to appeal overseas for the Tibetans who are striving for democracy in Tibet, and give them a variety of strong support.  Making all kinds of trouble for the Communist Party is a practical help and support for the Tibetan brothers and sisters in Tibet.  Providing friends in Tibet with various useful information and ideas is also meaningful support and help.  The Han Chinese friends have many effective experiences from the past few years, and we could learn from each other.

Wei Jingsheng's speech and the Q&A session received much enthusiastic applause and went beyond the scheduled time.   Other Tibetan and Uyghur friend also spoke at the symposium.
