Wei Jingsheng's Lecture at the National Committee for the Democratic Party of China

New York (Boxun, 9/9/2011) On September 6, 2011, senior pro-democracy activist Wei Jingsheng gave a keynote lecture on democracy in China at the headquarters of the National Committee for the Democratic Party of China.

The well-praised veteran for the Chinese democratic movement, Mr. Wei Jingsheng, called for a pioneering "Fifth Modernization" as early as 1978 during the Democracy Wall period in Beijing.  He stated that freedom and democracy is more important than improving material life.  He demanded to examine the personal dictatorship of Mao Zedong and political democratization, which earned his reputation all over the world.  For this reason, the Chinese government punished him with a 15 year sentence.  He left jail after fourteen and a half years.  He continued pro-democracy activities and criticized the Communist regime, which resulted another sentence.  He suffered a total of 18 years in jail.  Despite years in prison, he never yielded or participated in "self-criticism" as demanded by the Communist authority.  This display of action of will and dignity is respectable and admirable.

In Wei Jingsheng's lecture, he emphasized the superiority of the democratic system.  "In a democratic system, people have votes, with autonomy, and the right to restrict politicians and government officials.  Their lives are relatively better, while the officials do not dare to bully people and have less malpractice."

"This is reflected today in the  people's uprising in Libya.  Despite that Gaddafi's authoritarian regime seemed incredibly powerful, he had no way but to hide when the people revolted."

"Those of us in the position of the overseas democracy movement must continue to give enough pressure to the Chinese Communist Party.  As an example, your party members should go to the Chinese Consulate to protest often, in order to give confidence to the people in China and thus make them have enough courage to strive for democracy, to overthrow the unreasonable autocratic regime.  That is because the Communist Party today is not in a stable state, the status of the ruling class is falling, instead of being "harmonic".  Who really believes communism nowadays?  Those who want to join the Communist Party do so solely for a higher position with more benefits."

"As we all know, today's China has extreme disparity between rich and poor.  That is because under the authoritarian regime, the Communist Party officials in power are not restrained by the system and all they want is to abuse their power.  The average people without power have to be exploited and oppressed.  So, people who want to change the status quo are forced to rebel, in an effort to change the political system of the Communist Party."

"We cannot wait for a democratic China.  We cannot expect others to take the first charge, to sacrifice their blood and sweat, while we simply enjoy the fruits from these others.  What we have to do now is to sacrifice.  I hope all you party members can play a role, to add building bricks of the future democracy in China, while breaking down the bricks of the Communist regime until it collapses.  Of course, during the process of promoting democracy in China, we need to try our best to avoid bloodshed, or to reduce it as much as we can."

Mr. Wei's brilliant speech won applause from the members of the Democratic Party of China.  After his lecture, they had many questions about China's democracy movement.

Those who attended the lecture included co-chairman Wang Juntao, Song Shu-yuan, Li Guotao, Zhang Jian, Xu Ming, Yan Chenghong, Wu Gueysen, Zou Changming, Zhuo Yun, Jiang Yongdong, Yang Ming, Li Zaifeng, Yi Wen, Zhou Xiaoyang, Lu Wenfang, Haitao, Zheng Yueying, Zhang Shurong, Chen Ru, Zhuo Baokui, Cao Shiliang, Zhao Zhixin, Shi Weijiang, Qian Qin, Wang Yongzhen, Li Yi, Lin Juan, Lin Yuemei, Po Hao, Feng Qiaoxing, Wu Jinfeng, Zhao Tong, Shao Mingfeng, Tian Zhong, Liu Zengyun, Tao Hongbo, Ren Zhongmin, Xu Li, Zhang Chao, Li Qiuping, Zheng Xiumei, Li Guowei, Peng Yongyan, Huang Xinlin, Lin Jianyun, Wang Xiaoqing, and former New York Times reporter in Beijing, Mr. Zhao Yan.
