Wei Jingsheng Interviewed on WUSA, Talking about the Meaning of "Without Democracy, There is No Modernization in China"

On May 7, WUSA broadcasted Wei Jingsheng's interview with WUSA's Bruce Johnson about the current modernization of China.  WUSA is a television station broadcasting on channel 9 in the Washington, D.C. area.  It is owned by the Gannett Company, an international news and information company that publishes 99 daily newspapers in the USA, including USA Today, the nation's largest-selling daily newspaper.  WUSA is an affiliate of the CBS television network, and the longest-tenured affiliate of that network.

In Mr. Wei's interview, he talked about the ongoing cases of Chen Guangcheng and Bo Xilai as well as the future of China.  In particular, Wei Jingsheng talked about the meaning of "without democracy, there is no modernization in China"

Mr. Wei pointed out, now Chen Guangcheng is in the hands of the Chinese government, thus he become a card that Chinese government could play with.  Yet, the Obama administration still could demand to find out how Chen Guangcheng was persecuted and who was responsible.  These officials must be punished.

Regarding Bo Xilai's sudden fall from the Communist Party's rank, Mr. Wei said that it is just the internal struggle within the Communist Party, and it is not a change of political system.  Wei also said that, in the past, average people were against Bo Xilai because he used illegal ways in some cases.  But now things are turning around -- Bo himself is treated illegally by the others.  So average people really want to know the outcome.

Wei Jingsheng also pointed out that high-rise buildings and a lot of goods in China do not represent modernizations.  Modernization should be something that everyone enjoys. For example, in the USA, average people not only enjoy material life, but also liberty and democracy, which is the true meaning of modernization.  However, although a few percent of Chinese enjoy a good material life now, it is not modernization when there is no democracy and freedom.  Even a Communist elite like Bo Xilai, could fall out of that a few percent when he was detained through illegal means.

Finally, Wei Jingsheng said that the current Chinese people, especially the poor and the middle class, are getting more and more dissatisfied with the reality in China, for the lacking of democracy and rule of law.  So this country has two possibilities.  One is to reform, such as Taiwan and the former Soviet Union did.  Both models are possible.  The other is that if the Communist leadership refuses to take the initiation to reform, then the average Chinese will ran out patience.  They will revolt, like Egypt and Libya did.
