IFCSS Holds Its 23rd Consecutive Annual Commemoration in Memory of the June 4 Massacre in 1989

On June 2, 2012, the Independent Federation of the Chinese Students and Scholars (IFCSS) held a candle light vigil at the Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington DC.  This event was the 23rd consecutive year of commemoration of the June 4 Massacre in Beijing lead by the IFCSS since 1989.  It was also cosponsored by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, the Laogai Research Foundation, and the Federation of the Overseas Hong Kong Chinese in Washington, DC.

The memorial was attended by about 100 people and hosted by IFCSS council member YI Danxuan.  It started with a moment of silence and opening remarks by Dr. LU Wenhe, the council chair of the IFCSS.  Dr. Lu pointed out that the memorial service commemorates those compatriots who were brutally suppressed by the Chinese Communist regime when they strived for democracy and freedom in China.  A special audio remark by Ding Ziling, a TianAnMen mother, was also broadcasted to the participants.  She emphasized that the living environment of herself and other Tiananmen Mothers has not substantially changed.  She pointed out that "the iron curtain is not torn, and the totalitarianism is still operating in a black box."  She thanked participants of the commemoration for "refusing to forget", and defending the democratic spirit of 1989 movement.

Speeches were given by:

WEI Jingsheng, president of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation;

Lee Edwards, chair of the Victims of Communist Memorial Foundation;

Harry WU, president of the Laogai Research Foundation;

WU Ho-I, commission member of OCAD of Republic of China;

TAO Ye, the host for Tiananmen Mother website;

WANG Dan, a 1989 student leader;

YU Jie, a writer;

YANG Hsieh-Chun, Taiwanese community leader;

Edwin Fung, head of Federation of Overseas Hong Kong Chinese (DC);

HU Ping, chief editor of the Beijing Spring magazine.

During the commemoration, the IFCSS council member HUANG Ciping also announced the annual IFCSS "Spirit of Freedom Award" to the 62 years old Li WangYang, in Shaoyang city of Hunan Province.  Mr. Li was the head of the independent workers' union of Shaoyang city in 1989 and an opposition leader.  Thus he was sentenced twice by the Communist regime and stayed in jail for a collective of 21 years.  Mr. Li was only released recently from jail with poor health due to the abuses he received in jail -- now he cannot walk, cannot read, cannot talk, and even needs to be fed by others.

The commemoration ended with all the participants singing the chorus: the Wound of the History.

Many news media reported and interviewed this event, including Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, and World Journal, etc.

魏京生基金会主席魏京生;

共产主义受害者纪念基金会主席Lee Edwards;

劳改研究会会长吴宏达;

中华民国行政院侨委会委员巫和怡;

天安门母亲网站主持人陶业;

1989年的学生领袖王丹;

作家余杰;

台湾社区领袖杨贤俊;

华盛顿特区的海外香港华人联合会负责人Edwin Fung;
