Overseas Democracy Groups Hold International Conference and Adopt Copenhagen Declaration in Denmark

-- by Radio Free Asia, August 20, 2012

Recently, the international conference "Great Changes in China" and the working meeting of the European Charter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition was held in Copenhagen, the Danish capital.  The conference adopted "the Copenhagen Declaration" regarding China's future, and emphasized that everyone has a responsibility to the world's peace and prosperity.

In 2012, a series of events occurred in China, which include the cases of Wang Lijun, Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai inside the Communist leadership, and the social events of Wukan village, Shifang, and Qidong.

These incidents involved the fundamental issues of people's basic rights of survival and environment, as well as the power struggle within the Communist Party.  All these issues made the dissidents and democracy groups overseas even more active in 2012.

Under such a circumstance, on August 18 and 19, dissidents and democracy groups held a large-scale conference in Copenhagen, the Danish capital.  Mr. Liu Gang of the local democracy movement, was an organizer who was also in charge of the detailed preparations for the conference.

For this reason, on the morning of August 20, this reporter interviewed Mr. Liu to get an introduction to this large-scale conference over the previous weekend.

Mr. Liu first told this reporter: "over the weekend we had our friends from around the world, a total of nearly fifty people, coming to Copenhagen, Denmark.  We had this conference "Great Changes in China" and also held a working meeting for the European Charter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition."

About the content of the conference, Mr. Liu said: "At the conference, we discussed the democracy movement in China and the current status in China.  We also talked about the surging human rights movement in China and the preliminary awakening of the people.  We further discussed, as democratic advocators overseas who are determined to terminate the one party dictatorship in China, how we could help the people inside China to learn about truth.  As many friends have expressed, what is most worthy to be affirmed and noticed is when there is such a need inside China, the overseas Chinese democrats should, could, and are willing to provide all sorts of support.  This support should include moral and material support, even to the degree of standing out in person to participate and be in the frontline of this movement."

Regarding the theme speakers for this conference, Mr. Liu said: "The first one was Mr. Wei Jingsheng, the Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, then Mr. Pan Qing from Australia, Mr. Wang Guoxing from the Netherlands, and Mr. Qian Yuejun from Germany.  The main speakers also included some of our local friends in Denmark."

Finally, the conference adopted the Copenhagen Declaration.

The Copenhagen Declaration states that the rule of the Communist Party in China has brought China to a road of disaster that cannot be solved as long as the Party is in power.  Thus, the Declaration emphasizes that all the Chinese should have a sense of their responsibility to the world's peace and prosperity.  The dissidents and democracy groups that produced such a moral concept have more duty and responsibility to promote and support this moral concept.
