Wei Jingsheng Delivers Speech on "Power" at its First TEDx in Georgetown University

On September 28, 2012, Mr. Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak about "Power" at the TEDx event at Lohrfink Auditorium in Georgetown University.  This was the first independently organized TED ("Technology, Entertainment and Design") program organized at Georgetown University.  TEDx is a TED program popular in the last few years, in an effort to encourage local fans.  TED speech videos on the TED website have already surpassed 1,050 and have been viewed by more than 500,000,000 times.  TED's mission statement begins: "We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world.  So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other."

In his half-hour long speech, the main theme of Mr. Wei Jingsheng revolved around the different social systems of America and China, as well as their related differences in political and economic power.  Wei pointed out that the leaderships of both countries are undergoing power transitions recently.  He urged Americans to be responsible for their own democracy and for their society as a whole by carefully monitoring their elected politicians and treasuring the voting rights in their hands.  In comparison to the USA, China under its dictatorship is ridden with social crisis.  The corruption and disparity between rich and poor has reached the point where political reform must take its course.  Otherwise, it will be inevitable that the most exploited and opposed people at the bottom of the society will revolt and struggle.

Nearly 200 students in the auditorium listened to the speech.  More people viewed the speech live on the Internet.  After his speech more than a dozen of the audience followed Mr. Wei to continue their discussion on economic, historical, social and political issues of China and the USA, for nearly an hour.  Fifteen other celebrities include renowned journalists, activists and performing artists also participated in this daylong program and delivered their speeches. Afterward, newspapers and media of Georgetown University propagated the event.
