Wei Jingsheng Speaks at Vassar College

On April 17, 2013, Mr. Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak at the prestigious Vassar College about current Chinese politics and the democracy movement, as well as the future direction for China.

The two hour long event was conducted in the auditorium in Taylor Hall, with many questions and answers. Jih Kim, head of the Asian Students' Alliance, hosted the event, and Jill Levine, a senior at Vassar who just completed her senior capstone project on the Xidan Democracy Wall Movement, introduced Wei Jingsheng and his translator Huang Ciping. (Ms. Levine had a good interview of Mr. Wei in February 2013 that is recorded in her paper available at: http://digitalwindow.vassar.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1162&context=senior_capstone.)

During the event, Mr. Wei Jingsheng talked extensively and frankly about the Xidan Democracy Wall Movement in 1978 and his role during that movement; the 1989 democracy movement that ended with June 4 Massacre by the Communist regime; the role of Chinese intellectuals and the "3 representatives" of the Communist Party; the unstable and unbalanced society especially the disparity of rich and poor in China; the need of reform and the obstacles; the like hood of a revolution and people's limited choices; the division within the Communist leadership, especially the dilemma the new leadership is facing; Chinese government's effort to destroy democracy movement, and the reputation the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition under his leadership has to both Chinese people and international society. In particular, Mr. Wei emphasized that himself is just an average person, while the improvement of a society need many people's joint effort.

The event was preceded by a dinner with the students and ended with a reception in the auditorium. After the event, the enthusiastic students and professors talked with Mr. Wei for more than one hour on the beautiful campus of Vassar College.

魏京生在瓦瑟(Vassar)学院演讲

2013年4月17日，魏京生先生应邀在著名的瓦瑟学院就当前中国的政治和民主运动，以及未来中国的发展方向进行演讲。

长达两个小时的演讲在泰勒楼的礼堂举行。魏先生回答了许多的问题。亚洲学生联盟的金主席主持了这次活动。刚完成有关西单民主墙的高级顶点项目的吉尔·莱文小姐介绍了魏京生和他的翻译黄慈萍。（莱文小姐在她的优秀论文中记载了她在2013年2月对魏京生的访谈。这篇论文可在以下的网页上看到：http://digitalwindow.vassar.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1162&context=senior_capstone）。

演讲之前，魏先生等与学生们共进了晚餐。演讲会以招待会的方式结束。正式活动结束后，热情的学生和教授们与魏京生先生又在美丽的瓦瑟学院校园上畅谈了一个多小时。
