Wei Jingsheng and Wang Weilin at Remember Them: Champions for Humanity Monument in San Francisco Bay Area

-- By CK of Radio Free Asia

2013-07-19

Right before this year's 24th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre, the largest bronze monument of a sculpture group on the West Coast of the USA was completed in the San Francisco Bay area.  It includes 25 world humanitarian leaders, and 14 humanitarian leaders in the USA.  The pioneer of the modern Chinese democracy movement Wei Jingsheng is also included in the sculpture.  Wei Jingsheng expressed that it was not only his personal honor, but more importantly the recognition of Western democratic society towards all the Chinese who strive for democracy and freedom.

This group of sculptures called "Remember Them" is located in the Henry J. Kaiser Memorial Park in Oakland of the San Francisco Bay Area.  Recently, Wei Jingsheng's envoy Ms. Huang Ciping came to the Bay area to visit the sculpture group and to salute the famous sculptor who accomplished the monument, Mr. Mario Chiodo.  Ms. Huang is the Secretary General of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition lead by Wei Jingsheng.  She is also the Executive Director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.  When she was interviewed, she told the reporter that she received an enthusiastic hospitality from the sculptor during the visit.

In this sculpture group there is a quotation from Wei Jingsheng: "We all dream of freedom in the same way."

Huang Ciping passed words of Wei Jingsheng to the reporter that to be quoted with the other global humanitarians is not just his own personal honor.  More important is the recognition of the Western democratic society of all the Chinese who strive for democracy and freedom.

Huang Ciping said: "I have been helping Mr. Wei Jingsheng for so many years.  I observed how he adheres to his faith and insists on doing what he devoted himself to do, despite extreme difficult situations, especially the suppression by the Chinese Communist government.  I think this monument is recognition to the kind of work Wei Jingsheng is doing.  As an envoy of Mr. Wei, I am very proud to receive this honor and this recognition for him."

Among the world humanitarian leaders included in the sculpture group are: Gandhi, Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Theresa, and Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh.  With them, there is also the Chinese youth Wang Weilin who stopped the Chinese Army's tanks on Chang'an Avenue in Beijing in 1989.  Huang Ciping was deeply moved by this sculpture group.  She said: "Under each sculpture of the person, there is a name.  However, under Wang, there is the word 'courage', which made me very touched.  When I stood under and looked up at the towering figure standing there with determination, I remembered the calling for freedom and democracy 24 years ago by the students and citizens in Beijing, as well as people in China.  These demands were suppressed by tanks and machine guns back then.  However, as a matter of fact, the volume of voices has been increasing during the past twenty some years.  We have already seen the dawn ahead."

"Remember Them -- The Champions for Humanity" sculptures cover 100 square meters and took 12 years to create and cast at a cost of 8.9 million dollars.  More than 500 people came to the site to attend its inauguration.

This is a report by special correspondent CK from San Francisco.

(WE ALL DREAM OF FREEDOM IN THE SAME WAY)"。
