Wei Jingsheng Gives Lecture about "China in the Dawn of Historic Change" at the Montclair Kimberley Academy in New Jersey

On Wednesday, October 23, the Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School History Department presented a Hemmeter History Lecture, featuring Wei Jingsheng.  A private coeducational college-preparatory day school located in Montclair, New Jersey, it was voted "Best NJ Private School" by parents in Bloomberg Businessweek in 2009.  As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 959 students with a student-teacher ratio of 6:1.  124 of the 160 faculty members hold advanced degrees and 11 hold doctorates.

Wei Jingsheng's lecture "China in the Dawn of Historic Change: The Role and the Actions of the Chinese Democracy Activists" was hosted by Mr. David Hessler, director of the Hemmeter History Lecture Series.  A roomful of people attended the event at its Upper School Library.

Wei Jingsheng talked about recent Chinese history, especially in the last few decades, as well as the international atmosphere surrounding it.  He also discussed the current mood of the Chinese society and what the democracy activists have been doing.  He emphasized the need for change in China and the likely upcoming revolution ahead.  In his lecture, Wei Jingsheng in particular emphasized the following points.

1) The road for reform in China has been blocked by the interest groups of the Chinese Communist regime.  Varieties of peaceful evolution possibilities have been explicitly rejected by the current leadership.  Now, there are only two possibilities: maintaining the status quo or revolution.

2) To most of the Chinese, maintaining the status quo is intolerable.  Their poverty, lack of freedom and lack of dignity have lead them to hope for a revolution overthrowing the Communist rule.

3) Now, not only the ordinary people, but even the rich and powerful upper class also feels unable to survive normally.  Revolution in China is likely to start at the top.

4) There are many ways to effect revolution.  There is the possibility of chaos all over China, but there may be a coup similar to what happened with the former Soviet Union.  A coup would be the least costly path of revolution.

5) After the revolution, China will inevitably move towards democratization.  That is because the Chinese people now are not the Chinese people of a hundred years ago.  Chinese people are yearning for freedom and democracy, and ultimately will force those in power to take the road to democracy.

After the lecture, Mr. Wei answered enthusiastic questions.  He also signed his book "The Courage to Stand Alone: Letters from Prison and Other Writings" for the audience, as well as other posters and memorabilia.

Later in the evening, history faculty members lead by the Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School History Department chair Dr. David Korfhage invited Wei Jingsheng and his translator Huang Ciping for a dinner.  They praised the lecture as one of the best in the history of the Lecture series, which also demonstrated the American people's interest about China.  People at the dinner table talked about a lot of history, especially history related to revolutions -- all of the faculty members at the dinner table were experts who studied revolution.
