Celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Sakharov Freedom of Thought Prize by the European Parliament at the US Capital City, Washington DC (a Photo Album and Video Report)

 

 

On Tuesday, January 14, 2014, there was a full day long celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Sakharov Freedom of Thought Prize by the European Parliament in the US Capital City, Washington DC.  Highlighted with several Sakharov Prize laureates and arranged mainly by the European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress, many freedom activists and human rights organizations, as well as politicians and diplomats participated in the daylong event.  In the morning, the invited laureates visited the European Parliament Liaison Office in Washington DC and met with several of its officers:

Later, the laureates and some officers went to Freedom House for lunch and a round table discussion, joined by more than one dozen human rights organizations and diplomats:

During the lunch discussion, the laureates also expressed their stands and opinions about human rights and associated issues.  Rosa Maria Paya, the daughter of Oswaldo Jose Paya Sardinas, 2002 Sakharov Prize recipient, made a plea to investigate her father's tragic death in 2012:

The highlight of the day was the celebration and reception held in the US Congress, the beautiful Caucus room in the Cannon House Office Building, joined by about 100 human rights and democracy activists:

This public event was hosted by the European Parliament Liaison Office with the U.S. Congress in conjunction with the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the US House.  Congressman Frank Wolf, the co-chair of the Lantos Human Rights Commission, delivered a speech in support of human rights defenders:

US Senator Chris Murphy also came to the celebration to express his support and talked about his recent trip to Ukraine supporting protesters:

Senior Congressman Chris Smith delivered a passionate speech about supporting democracy and human rights, especially recalled his meeting with Wei Jingsheng 20 years ago in Beijing:

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart delivered his speech to support people's rights in countries like Cuba, China, North Korea, etc.  After his speech, he especially came to Wei Jingsheng to shake hands and to express solidarity with Wei:

All the laureates talked about their own unique experiences in relation to the prize.  In particular, Wei Jingsheng, the 1996 Sakharov Prize recipient, emphasized the importance for a broader human rights community in the U.S. and Europe collaborating together to support global wide human rights defenders more effectively:

Hauwa Ibrahim, a 2005 Sakharov Prize laureate, talked about her work as a lawyer against religious fundamentalism in her native Nigeria (to her left was Antoine Ripoll, head of the European Parliament Liaison Office and Rosa Maria Paya):

Jim Hoagland, a contributing editor at The Washington Post and two-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, as well as a board member of the 2005 Sakharov Prize winner Reporters Without Borders, briefed the audience about what the organization has been doing in support freedom around the world:

Rosa Maria Paya also spoke.  She and Wei Jingsheng were warmly greeted by Congresswoman Ilean Ros-Lehtinen, the first Hispanic woman and the first Cuban American elected to Congress, and Lincoln Diaz-Balart, former US Congressman who has been a decades-long supporter of human rights:

Lincoln Diaz-Balart was so pleased to see his old friend, Wei Jingsheng.  He told Wei Jingsheng that not only had he admired Wei Jingsheng for a long time, but also people in Cuba had a fan club of Wei built on the Internet, even though it was cracked down recently:

The day long celebration ended with a dinner banquet honoring the laureates that was hosted by the European Institute at the Cosmos Club.  It was attended by about 70 diplomats, politicians, and scholars.  It was followed by a dinner discussion with the laureates.  Joelle Attinger, the President of the European Institute, gave the welcome speech.  Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy made the introductory remarks before the laureates made their speeches.  Mr. Gershman added that Wei Jingsheng is also a recipient of the Democracy Award by National Endowment for Democracy:

2014年1月14日,周二,欧洲议会萨哈罗夫思想自由奖在美国首都华盛顿的25周年庆祝活动进行了整整一天。以若干个萨哈罗夫奖获得者为重点,欧洲议会与美国国会联合举办了有许多活动家和人权组织及政治家和外交家参加的为期一天的盛会。当天早上,萨哈罗夫思想自由奖获奖者受邀参观了欧洲议会美国国会联络处在华盛顿的办公室,并会见了其官员:
