Religion and Terrorism

-- Wei Jingsheng

Most people often make simple and intuitive errors while judging complex issues.  When these errors do not get correct constraints and guidance, it often starts to rapidly develop on a wrong path and ultimately lead to disaster.  People 's emotions tend to resonate, whether the conclusion is correct or not.

For example, after the well-known 911 disaster, the society in the United States started a trend of excluding Muslims.  Many people indiscriminately thought Islam itself raises and educates the terrorists, as well as helps the terrorists raise funds and create a variety of conditions.  Thus, although the government and the law does not allow discrimination against Muslims, people take practical action to boycott the Muslims to the degree that many totally law-abiding Muslims cannot even make a living.

At this time there are a lot of insightful people who came out and explained patiently.  First, Osama bin Laden was not nurtured by Muslims.  Instead, Osama bin Laden and his fellow terrorists just happened to be trained by the CIA to deal with the Soviets.  Now Americans are shooting themselves in the foot, and cannot shift the blame to Islam.

Second, most Muslim countries do not accept terrorists like Osama bin Laden either.  Even a dictator like Saddam Hussein would not accept this gang of terrorists.  Most of Islam in the world not only would not accept these terrorists, but also severely condemn terrorist attacks against civilians.  Among the vast majority of Muslims, terrorism is neither popular, nor associated with Islam.

Third, the origin of modern terrorism happens to be unrelated to Islam.  It has a direct association with the extremist ideology of communism.  We see this association from the rise of the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1960's and 1970's, to the Red Brigades of Italy, to the Japanese Red Army, to Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) in Peru, and the most famous Red Army Faction in Germany.  Just listening to these names, most of people could guess these terrorist organizations do not have anything to do with Islam.  Instead, they are all have obvious relationships associated with the fundamentalist factions of Communism and Mao Zedong's Thought.

In the circle of ideology and biology, there are many things that do not have a linear logic.  Some insects may not be significant in its original location, yet it makes a huge disaster on a new continent.  No one would think a few bunny rabbits to be a disaster, yet there were no predators in Australia that were fast enough to catch them.  It did not need very many years for the rabbits to become a disaster by eating the pasture and thus become the number one enemy to the Australian herders.

Communism is also something like that.  In Europe where it originated, it was just a pet in the hands of some radical intellectuals.  But in Eastern Europe and Asia, appearing with the face of fundamentalism, it started to call all others as revisionism and invaded all the way into disaster.  Of which, the most ferocious, the most blatant, and indeed which has become independent to form its own system thus able to return to fool the Europeans is the Mao Zedong Thought from China.  In the nineteen sixties and seventies, the first wave of terrorism reached its climax in Western democratic countries.

Yasser Arafat in his black-and-white checkered keffiyeh should be counted as the head culprit to bring terrorism to its climax in the Arab countries.  For the purpose of containing Israel, these oil rich countries spent a lot to feed Arafat, this extreme terrorist.  His imitators do not have as much good luck as he did.  Unable to spend big money to feed the terrorist army, they could only rely on faith to fool young people into turning themselves to ashes under canon.  Starting from that era, the rebels in the Muslim countries have turned themselves into fundamentalists one after another.

The common feature of fundamentalism is to claim the imams in the traditional mosques as revisionists, who distort the teachings of the Prophet.  So now the fundamentalists come to teach the true and original teachings, the original doctrine of the Prophet Muhammad.  So they self-claim themselves as fundamentalists.  Whether it is Christianity or Islam, both have origins from the Judaism in the Middle East.  The original scriptures do contain a lot of rhetoric of violence and terror.

So at an early stage, these religions were killing each other, or killing within.  They were like the Red Guard rebels during the Cultural Revolution period in China, who held the very same Red Book of Mao Zedong, yet mercilessly killed all others with different interpretations of that same book.  After more than one thousand years of slaughtering each other, people began realizing there is no sense in continuing so.  So starting from the Christians in the United States, and then extending to Christianity in the whole globe, they have learned to tolerate each other and respect each other.  Finally people have embarked on the process of modernizing religion.

Soon after, most of the Islam religion also quietly began their reforms.  They do not repeat the verses of murder, arson, and mission through force.  Gradually, they started to put love as the first priority and mutual respect.  Unfortunately, at that time, it just happened the speed of modernization in the Arabic world was slower than in their neighboring European countries, and the social discontent and social conflict started to rise rapidly.  This gave the Muslim fundamentalists good chances to attract the lower classes who were discontented with the upper classes of the religion

The distance from fundamentalism to the terrorism of religious extremes was never far away.  Thus almost all the social conflicts in the Muslim countries are developing toward the religious extremes and growing larger and stronger.  The most outstanding examples would be the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and the Taliban in Afghanistan, which have developed into the first major political forces by population in their own countries.  When left unchecked, they will certainly become strongholds of terrorism in the whole world.

The so-called radical Muslim organizations in Xinjiang basically have a similar track as the Muslim fundamentalism in the whole world, except a later start-up.  However, radicalization has been catching up rapidly in Xinjiang.  This development is due to the positive relationship of the rapidly expanding wealth gap and intensified social conflict in Xinjiang.  In particular, due to the persecution during the Cultural Revolution period, the imams have become intimidated and speak according to the caliber of the Communist government.  This toadyism has resulted in even more loss of the trust of Muslim followers in Xinjiang.  It has left an extremely large space for the terrorism, which sounds cool and seems to be likely effective.

A three-foot deep freeze is not a result of one cold day, just like Rome was not built in a day.  The Xinjiang problem will not be solved effectively through a policy of blind repression, or a policy of continuous appeasement.  Of the factors, the Communist regime is a great impediment.  People with a breadth of vision could discuss and see how to return the ethnic relations in China back to where they were before Muslim fundamentalism came to China.
