Love Our People, but Not the Communist Parties

-- Wei Jingsheng's Speech at the US Congress on Vietnam Freedom and Democracy Day

(On July 16, 2014, Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak at the plenary session at the Cannon House Office Building in the US Congress, as part of activities of Vietnam Freedom and Democracy Day.  The event was organized by Coalition for a Free and Democratic Vietnam.  The session focused on the current state of Asia, especially the relationship of Vietnam, China and the neighboring nations.  Former Congressman Joseph Cao facilitated the panel.  Four other panelists participated including former US Ambassador Grover Joseph Rees, newly released Vietnamese political prisoner Dr. Cu Huy Ha Vu, and professor Xai Yeliang of the Cato Institute.  Several US congressmen attended and also spoke at the event, which was attended by about 200 Vietnamese-Americans and others.  This was the first international public event that Wei Jingsheng attended since his hospitalization.  The following is the speech he delivered during the penal session.)

Wei Jingsheng:

First of all, I want to thank Congressman Joseph Cao, Ambassador Grover Joseph Rees and conference organizers for inviting me to come and speak.

In 1979 during the Sino-Vietnamese War, my friends and I published anti-war articles.  This activity was also one of charges against me to put me in prison.  Why did we run the risk of imprisonment to speak out against the Sino-Vietnamese war?  Because we thought that war was a cover-up to divert the Chinese people's attention, in order to consolidate the rule of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and to strengthen the personal dictatorship of then CCP leader Deng Xiaoping.  It was a movement fanned up by the Chinese Communist Party to stupefy the Chinese people under the guise of so-called patriotism and nationalism for China.

Today, both the Communist Parties of China and Vietnam are experiencing domestic crisis.  Both want to fool the people by means of patriotic fervor, in an effort to extend their rule and refuse democratic reform.  Our goal is to make our countries get on the path of democracy and freedom.  Their purpose is just the opposite of our objective.  Do we need to support their patriotism?  No one in our Chinese democracy movement in China supports the war clamor.  Neither do we care about the faked patriotism by the Chinese Communist Party of China -- because it is really just a doctrine of loving the Communist Party.

I see many of my Vietnamese friends were fooled the Vietnamese Communist authorities and fell into a patriotic frenzy of anti-aggression.  I want to remind my friends, we love our countries that belong to the people with the rights of democracy and freedom, but not nations of one-party dictatorship by the Communist Party.  The Communist nations only belong to a handful of rulers, rather than the Vietnamese and Chinese peoples.  Why do we want to love the Communist nations?

Why do we have to go along with their patriotism?  Why should we mobilize people to defend their one-party dictatorship?  It seems they do not want to really fight right now anyway.  They just want to stage some patriotic shows in an effort to attract people's support, and thus cover up internal political crisis.  This cover-up is

irrelevant to the patriotism issue.  Assuming they really fight against each other, then they will collapse even faster.  Then we would have a chance to establish a system of democracy and freedom, and have a chance to save our people.  From this perspective, we should not support their false patriotism either.

When there is confrontation between the authoritarian fascist regimes, it is really a case of what is described by the Chinese people's words as: "When two bad dogs are biting each other, they should only got their mouthful of dog hairs (that is not our business)."  We have no need to discuss which bad dog we should help.  Our responsibility is to get rid of both bad dogs, and to strive for a new society of peace, democracy, and freedom for all the people.

Thank you,

--Wei Jingsheng
