Supporting People in Hong Kong is also Supporting Ourselves, But How Do We Do It?

-- Huang Ciping's Speech at Support the People of Hong Kong Rally in Front of the Chinese Consulate in New York City, on October 7, 2014

Thanks to the organizers for inviting me to speak at today's rally.  I have always invited others to speak and am not used to speaking without any preparation.  So I will just say what comes to my mind.

Thanks to Lao Ni for taking the lead for today's demonstration.  We have known each other for so long since we tried to establish the first political party in opposition more than a quarter century ago.  I still remember vividly that I invited you to our university and the students loved your talk.

Thanks also to Juntao for showing me the growth of your party.  I have known you for more than 30 years now.  I remember 20 years ago, I drove to Chicago to meet you, and then followed you to Minnesota in an effort to convince you unsuccessfully to establish a political opposition party against the Communist Party.  You nicknamed me "the Female Party Head" instead.

After all these years, now we are all here together.  We are here together to support the people in Hong Kong, for their voting rights.  Many people have already said plenty about why we should support the people in Hong Kong and how important it is.  But let me emphasize one idea: supporting the people in Hong Kong is also supporting ourselves, not just we here in the USA, but more so the people in Mainland China.

I see you chanting.  I see you holding your signs to support people in Hong Kong in their demand for democracy, for a fair and just vote of their leader.  Here you are, having been not just using words, but also taking actions to choose democracy - unable to vote in China by your hands, but choosing to come to vote for America by your feet.

Your actions speak louder than anything else, that you love freedom and democracy in this country despite it maybe being a difficult journey.  Regardless what the initial motivation and the end result are, I trust this: you all love freedom and democracy.  So do the people in Hong Kong, so do the people inside China.  They all over freedom and democracy as well.  So when we are here to support the people in Hong Kong, we are not just supporting our own goals, but also the goals of all Chinese people.

So what can we do besides being here today to chant in a demonstration of solidarity with people in Hong Kong?  We should do more.  I hope you will continue your support to people in Hong Kong even after this rally, every day, whenever you can.  Learn as much as you can, and do as much as you can.

For example, you could conveniently use the modern day technology to spread the news, to express yourself, and to support freedom of information, one of the aspects of freedom.  In particular, the Internet and cell phones are all good tools for us to spread the news, the truth, and the will of the people.  I am really convinced of this and thus some people have titled me "with the psychology of a prodigy child".  Maybe there is some truth, but this technology is easy to use by everyone now, not just by some retired "prodigy child".  I myself recognize that to overthrow tyrants and build democracy, we cannot only rely on a few elites.  We progress as time moves forward.  We always could learn and should learn, to catch up with the technology trends of the world, to make democracy a big trend of the world that no one will be able to reverse.

So for those of you who are interested to learn, I do a little advertisement here.  We will offer some workshops about the democracy movement and also Internet use, especially online security, on October 22.  It will be a good opportunity to learn the skills to promote freedom of information, as well as to protect yourself and the others.

Thank you!
