"Issues and Opinions" Program: Wei Jingsheng Talks about the Anti-Corruption Campaign of the Communist Party and the Current Political Situation in China

-- Bao Shen and Yu Zhou, Voice of America

18.02.2015 23:12

Washington --

Since Xi Jinping became the highest ranked military and political leader of China, there has been astonishing change within Chinese politics.  The anti-corruption campaign has been carried out in unprecedented breadth and depth with corruptive "big tigers" arrested one after another, as well as the rumors that even more and bigger tigers are about to be arrested.  Meanwhile, questioning of this anti-corruption campaign has been prevalent, suggesting it is only selective for power struggle purposes.  Will Xi Jinping's efforts to save the Communist Party avoid what had happened to the former Soviet Union?  Where is his anti-corruption campaign guiding the Communist Party in China?  Will he make himself the second Mao Zedong through all he did in an effort to consolidate his personal status and prestige?  Today, the "Issues and Opinions" program invites Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, to talk about the anti-corruption campaign of the Communist Party and the current political situation in China.

During the program, Wei Jingsheng talks about how the regimes of Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao had lost people's hearts, while the popularity of the Internet opened up people's wisdom; Xi Jinping hopes to regain the people's hearts through the anti-corruption campaign, and thus reach his goal of purifying the Communist Party and the centralization power to himself.  However, anti-corruption cannot change the reality that the Communist Party will not regain people's hearts, and thus this situation is hopeless.  Only democracy is the prescription to cure the Communist Party and the current China.

The following are the comments in the two hours after the program video and above transcript were posted on VOA's website.

Comment 1: at 19.02.2015 01:50

Wei Jingsheng is the pioneer against Communist tyranny and for democratic politics.  Chinese New Year's greetings to Mr. Wei and VOA colleagues.

Comment 2: at 19.02.2015 01:49

Wei Jingsheng's talk in this program was good, focusing on various Chinese culture, social and political issues in a concise way with clear thoughts to let others grasp the core essence and thus agree with him.

Comment 3: at 19.02.2015 01:49

Like Wei Jingsheng's program.

Comment 4: at 19.02.2015 01:00

Wei Jingsheng is a rare Chinese democracy fighter now.  He is the hero for us the young and middle aged generations.  China needs his thoughts and ideas to replace the current twilight of intellectual thoughts.  His ideals of creativity and revolution will promote Chinese people's awareness of democracy.  I wish him health in the (upcoming) year of Ram and the realization of his ideology!

Comment 5: at 19.02.2015 00:47

Xi's actions are clearly observed.  Xi wants to take the ruling road of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew.  He does not want to give people a true constitutional democracy, but with some rule of law.

Comment 6: at 19.02.2015 00:39

At this time of the traditional Chinese New Year's Eve, many of our democrats, pro-democracy activists, and human rights defenders are still suffering in prisons to spent their new year.  The democrats outside are also in a big prison under the strict control of the Communist dictatorship.  At this New Year eve heading to the Year of the Ram in 2015, we want to send our greetings to the democracy fighters who were and are in the jails of injustice.  We miss you and are sorry for your suffering.  How are you behind the cold iron bars?  Please take care of yourselves.

Comment 7: at 19.02.2015 00:31

I feel Old Wei is not really happy overseas.  To the least he could not do as much to promote the Chinese democracy movement.  He does not have direct contact with average Chinese because he is so far away and lacks new ideas to promote Chinese democracy movement vigorously.  In addition, he is unable to raise funds for the Chinese pro-democracy activities.  Well, what Old Wei can do?  In pro-democracy circles, there is a new nickname joked about him called "Renovation Wei".  It is joking but also reflects that, after he has been in the United States for so many years, he only got his own office a couple years ago through a lot of trouble.  He had to hands-on renovate his own office, thus gaining this nickname.  It will be a long road for him to push for democracy in China.  Let's see when he can achieve the goal in his heart?

Comment A following comment 7: at 19.02.2015 01:54

You can only hide in the corner laughing at someone else.  Do you dare to use your real name to debate?  Your point of view is not important; the key is that you are disgusting with this kind of approach.

Comment B following comment 7: at 19.02.2015 01:48

So what is wrong in renovating himself?  Indeed it is difficult to promote democracy with people like you!

Comment C following comment 7: at 19.02.2015 01:41

The fact is that this person (made comment 7) is not happy, because he could not enjoy his life like his corrupt brothers in China and has to spend his days with dark mission in the cultural atmosphere he could not take.  So whenever peace loving and caring people appear, he hates to the degree that his teeth itch.  He lives in the dark and is unable to see the sunlight!

Comment 8: at 19.02.2015 00:23

The Communist Party never really thought about the people.  Do not mislead people.

Comment 9: at 19.02.2015 00:22

Think about the overseas media reports that Xi Jinping's family has accumulated countless fortune, think about how Xi shields these media, then one should know this kind of thing to be expected.

Comment 10: at 19.02.2015 00:16

Every year has 'get rid of "Xi"', I am wondering when will be able to get rid of "Xi".

Comment 11: at 19.02.2015 00:12

Mr. Wei is a person of very rational thinking.  I have always thought him as a fighter and angry youth.

1: at 19.02.2015 01:50

跟贴A: 19.02.2015 01:54
