VOA Issues and Opinions: As the 26th Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre Approaching, Wei Jingsheng Interpreting the Current Situation in China

The anniversary of the June 4 TianAnMen Massacre in Beijing that shocked the world is quickly approaching.  For the past 26 years, China has experienced political change and economic development.  However, the Communist government is facing the corruption of its political party and institutional problems, while the Chinese people are trapped deeply in ethnic discord, class differentiation, and lack of freedom.  So, where is the significance of the Tiananmen events of 1989?  Is the issue of dissolving the ban about June 4 imminent?  Today, VOA's "Issues and Opinions" program invites the famous Chinese democracy campaigner Wei Jingsheng to provide an analysis for us.

Wei Jingsheng, the Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, told VOA's "Issues and Opinions" that 26 years after the eruption of the 1989 democracy movement in China, we are seeing the degradation of political confidence among the people who hold power in China.  He pointed out that in particular Xi Jinping has tightened the people's freedom with control over Chinese citizens' speeches and religion even more than the last Communist leaders.  As the Chinese economy grew rapidly, corrupt officials became ubiquitous.  This phenomenon indicates that only with a matching political reform, one may safeguard the fruits of economic development.  Wei Jingsheng also stated that although the demands of the 1989 democracy movement have yet to be achieved today, history will prove its significance to be even beyond the May Fourth Movement in China years back.
