Wei Jingsheng: While Observing the 26th Anniversary, No One Can Stop the Spirit of the 1989 Democracy Movement

-- by Si Yang and Wang Ziyang, Voice of America

31.05.2015 11:45

On Saturday, May 30, 2015, in the US capital Washington, DC, the 26th consecutive yearly commemoration in memory of the victims sacrificed in the 1989 pro-democracy movement lead by the IFCSS (the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars, USA) was held.  Wei Jingsheng, the pro-democracy veteran who has been in exile, said that the spirit of the 1989 democracy movement in pursuing democracy and human rights has not be lost after 26 years.  In addition, a new generation of Chinese overseas expressed that it is their social responsibility to commemorate the 1989 democracy movement.

The IFCSS held its 26th annual candle light vigil in commemoration of the June 4 Massacre of the 1989 pro-democracy movement from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in the park in front of the Chinese embassy .

Wei Jingsheng was already in jail even ten years before the 1989 student movement.  The veteran pro-democracy activist spoke at this commemorative gathering.  He said that maybe to some people, the massacre in Beijing 26 years ago is already a distant memory.  Further, many young Chinese do not know about the June 4 Massacre because of the blockade by the Chinese Communist Party.  However, he said that he is not worried about the disappearance of the 1989 spirit, nor is he concerned of a lacking of successors for China's "democratization".

He said: "Someone said, 'China's democratization may not have successors,' and I said: 'not so.'  One may not know about the June 4 Massacre, but everyone knows one needs to be respected by others.  Everyone wants human rights and to live a good life.  China needs to have democracy.  If they know this, then this is the spirit of the 1989 democracy movement.  This spirit can not be erased nor could it be stopped."

Wei Jingsheng recognized that in comparison to before, due to various reasons, the number of people who attend the commemoration has declined significantly.

Gu Yi is one of the younger generation who came to attend the 26 anniversary of the June 4 Massacre.  He currently is a doctoral student at the University of Georgia.  Recently, he drafted "an open letter to the students in China at the 26th anniversary of June 4", which received criticism by the official media of the Chinese government.

He explained the reason for him to draft this open letter.

"This time we drafted this open letter about June 4, because we came to study abroad and found we are able to access a lot of the information which was difficult to access when we were in China.  We got to know the history of our country 26 years ago, with such a tragic scene.  Yet, the truth has been concealed and was tampered with.  The then survivors are still being harassed and imprisoned.  The then victims are unknown.  We feel, as Chinese, we have the responsibility to speak out the truth, especially to let people in our generation and those inside China to learn, so the blood of these victims of the June 4 Massacre would not be wasted."

Gu Yi admitted that he was worried and had fears, but in the end he chose to do so in the hope that his own offspring will not be as afraid as himself.

Wu Jianmin was one of the participants of the 1989 democracy movement.  He was one of the leaders of the Independent Federation of the Nanjing Colleges and thus was thrown into jail for 7 years after 1989.  One month ago, he had just left China to come to the United States.

He said the reason to commemorate June 4 is because the bloodstain has only darkened after the June 4 Massacre.  "That is because for the past 26 years, the Communist Party has not changed the course they had carried out all these years.  The Communist regime has not pushed Chinese political reform and democratic revolution further.  Instead, since last year, we have seen people like Guo Yushan, Pu Zhiqiang, and Yu Shiwen, etc. were sent to jail as I was, because of their pursuit of freedom.  The suppression against these liberals is completely contrary to our effort to promote constitutional government and the rule of law in China."

The suppression of dissidents by the Communist Party has continued since June 4, 1989, with an upward trend in recent years.  Some dissidents, including Nobel Peace Prize recipent Liu Xiaobo, reporter Gao Yu, human rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang, are still in prison.  The IFCSS dedicated its 2015 "Spirit of Freedom Award" to Gao Yu, who received a seven years sentence in April of this year.
