Famous Democracy Activist Wei Jingsheng Talks About the June 4 Massacre and Sino-US Relations (videos)

-- Boxun Released on June 3, 2015, Beijing Time

During the commemoration of the 26th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre in Beijing, Wei Jingsheng, the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, accepted the interview by the Boxun reporter.  He speaks about the commemoration of June 4 and the Sino-US relationship prior to the US visit of Xi Jinping.

While he talked about the commemoration of the June 4 Massacre, Wei Jingsheng pointed out that some friends are disappointed because there seems no result from the annual commemoration, while some other friends are frustrated by the many youths who have forgotten about June 4 due to the news blockade by the Communist regime.  Wei said these thoughts are understandable but need to be corrected.  This time in Washington DC, there were a lot of young people participating in the June 4 commemoration.  Their speeches were very passionate and their understanding of the event was also right.  We need to encourage more young people to understand, to learn the spirit of the martyrs of June 4, to push China's democratization process.  Although the Communist regime can block people from learning the truth of the June 4 Massacre, it cannot block people's desire to pursue happiness.  As long as this desire exists, there is no way to conceal the truth of the June 4 Massacre.  Regarding if the appeal of "anti-corruption, and anti-profiteering by officials" in 1989 was consistent with Xi Jinping's "anti-corruption", Wei Jingsheng pointed out that in the past, feudal emperors also repeatedly  engaged in "anti-corruption," even to the degree of stripping the skins of the corrupted officials as a warning.   However, without effective systematic  change, the fight against corruption was only piecemeal.   After each crackdown, the thought to corrupt by the officials overwhelmed the fear, thus restarting another cycle of corruption.   In the past, the Communist leader Mao Zedong struck so at corruption.   Xi Jinping's results will be no different.   This kind of selective anti-corruption is totally different from the demand for political reform and anti-corruption by the students in the 1989 democracy movement.

Wei Jingsheng also expessed his view about the Sino-US relationship prior to Xi Jinping's US visit.  He thinks that the main task of Xi's visit is to establish mutual trust between the US and China, in an effort to prevent a military confrontation or even accidental misfires in the East China Sea and South China Sea between the two countries.  The overall relationship between China and the USA will not have any big change.  The mainstream will be business and contacts with reduced friction.  Despite the worsening of Chinese human rights, rights will not be the main talking point during the summit between the two countries.  There are a group of US Congressional members that support us.  However, that support is not enough to affect the China Policy by the US Administration and the US State Department.  Thus, for those of us who fight for the improvement of human rights in China, there is still a long way to go.

Wei Jingsheng also talked about Japan-US relations and Taiwan-US relations.

Reader's comment followed this report:

Wei Jingsheng is the Chinese democracy activist who enjoys the highest recognition and trust by the Western Congresses and governments, and the Western media and people.  More, Wei Jingsheng is a statesman with an international outlook and rich experience of international practice.  Most importantly, not only does Wei see China issues clearly, he also is loyal to his beliefs and always stand on the most conscious side.  As the Chinese Communist regime gets even more crazy at its dead end, as the international and domestic situation in China comes to the point of regrouping, the value of Wei Jingsheng and the Wei Jingsheng kind of overseas democracy movement will become even more important.  I trust that Wei Jingsheng fully knows of his own value, as well as is fully aware of his glorious mission.  Blessings to Wei for his health and longevity.  The question by Reporter Xi Nuo and the answers by Wei Jingsheng are both just right and outstanding.
