VOA Issues and Opinions: Wei Jingsheng Talks About Passing the Torch of the Spirit of the 1989 Democracy Movement in China

-- by Bao Shen, Voice of America

Last Update 03.06.2015 23:44

Washington -

A full 26 years have passed since the June 4 Massacre in Beijing that shocked the world.  26 years is a span of a generation, and China and the world have undergone tremendous changes.  However, memories of the people of that bloody repression have not faded along with the passage of time.

One highlight of this year's commemoration of the June 4 Massacre was a group of young people who were born around 1989 who have consciously and courageously joined the rank of memory and remembrance of the Massacre, after they learned the truth of this event.  In their own words, "It is a disloyalty to forget history; it is an injustice to the deceased to forgive the butchers."  Today, the "Issues and Opinions" program invited Wei Jingsheng, the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, to talk about passing the torch of the spirit of the 1989 democracy movement in China.

Wei Jingsheng told VOA's "Issues and Opinions" program that there is a need to correctly understand the word "revolution", as the voice for revolution in China is rising again.  The meaning of "revolution" includes fundamental changes brought about by means of violence and by means of peace.  Although the June 4 Massacre is further and further away from us, the "open letter" from the younger generation this year illustrates that the new generation growing up in China has an even more clear and persistent pursuit for historical truth and political legitimacy.

Wei Jingsheng said that the spirit of the 1989 Democracy Movement in China was to pursue anti-corruption, democracy, the good life and basic human rights, all of which are a natural human pursuit.  With the crackdown of the Communist regime on June 4, 1989, we missed a good opportunity for political reform in China -- after all, back then, the whole country had clearly chosen the side of reform, including the State Council.  Although the pursuit of political reform of the 1989 Democracy Movement was not successful, it shocked the world, and also changed the global political landscape.  Inside China, the Holocaust on June 4 has not only stopped the steps toward economic reform in China, but also led to the social instability in China today -- and an authoritarian government that has to spend more money to maintain stability than on its military in an effort to monitor and control people's minds, words and actions.  Now, we see Xi Jinping continues to use the lawlessness of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in an effort to preserve his one-party dictatorial rule.

Wei Jingsheng further stated that although we see very few Chinese people commemorating the June 4 Massacre, that does not mean they have forgotten or lack inspiration for democracy and human rights in their hearts.  On the contrary, the Chinese people under the close monitoring of the Chinese Communist regime are gathering a huge energy for reform.  This energy will erupt and spread at the right time of the revolution.
