The Second International Seminar "China Road" Concluded in The Hague

-- reported by: Tian Yi, Radio Free Asia

2015-08-18

The China Road Research Institute held a seminar on China's democratization issues in The Hague on August 16 and 17, 2015.  Scholars, experts, writers and dissidents from various parts of Europe, as well as from the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other places, were in attendance.

The China Road Research Institute is a private research institute registered in the Netherlands.  In September 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Institute successfully held the first international seminar on Chinese contemporary issues.  Participants in the first seminar included the famous French sinologist Professor Marie Holzman, well-known professor of political science from Taiwan Mr. Lee Yeau-Tarn, as well as dissidents, experts and scholars from around the world including Europe, the United States and Hong Kong, etc.

On August 16th and 17th of this year, the Institute held its second "China Road" International Seminar in The Hague.  This reporter specially attended the two-day conference.

The conference registration started in the afternoon at 2pm on August 17.  Then it held a simple opening ceremony for the conference presided over by Mr. Lan Wei.  Another major person responsible for the conference, Mr. Wang Guoxing, delivered the opening speech.

Mr. Wang Guoxing said, "I want to make these opening remarks really short.  Our conference shall be divided into two parts, over today and tomorrow.  I will explain the major part of the conference for tomorrow, when we will spend the whole day listening to academics, scholars, and experts in their field of study speaking of the current situation and future development in China, followed by our discussion."

In addition to discussing ideas and academic issues, the Conference organized a special theme regarding the Chinese democracy movement about which Mr. Wang Guoxing said, "The second part is today.  We took this rare opportunity to have the European working meeting of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition because Mr. Wei Jingsheng came to Europe to attend our conference.  For this conference, we will not be limited by our formality, nor be too nervous and serious.  Why do I say it is a rare opportunity for us today that Old Wei has come to Europe?  This is because this is his first long distance trip since his recovery from a major illness.  Finally, on behalf of the preparatory committee of this conference, I thank you all for attending this conference."

During the two-day long seminar, speakers included Mr. Lee Yeau-Tarn, a prominent political science professor from Taiwan; Mr. Bei Ling, President of the Independent Chinese PEN; Mr. Xue Wei, a senior pro-democracy activist; Mr. Xi Haiming, chairman of the influential Tibetan, Uyghur, Mongolian and Chinese Negotiation Association in Europe and a Mongolian rights defending leader; a former chairman of the Uyghur Association in the Netherlands; Dr. Peng Tao, a German political scholar; Dr. Huang Zhong, an expert on Marxism from Hong Kong; Mr. Cheng Binlin, one of the authors of the book "Political Change Strategy".  The conference concluded in the evening of August 17th.  Mr. Chen Zhonghe, a well-known pro-democracy activist in exile in the Netherlands made a closing statement.  In his closing remarks, he said, "This conference is a success.  Many of our scholars gave wonderful reports, as well as our great poet, Mr. Bei Ling.  Democracy leader Wei Jingsheng has delivered a very wonderful speech, to make our conference really shining with luster.  We also had political scholars Dr. Peng Tao and Dr. Wang Ce giving very good speeches.  Finally, there is the political science professor from Taiwan, Dean Lee Yeau-Tarn, who also made a very important report that analysed the future direction of China from all the fronts.  So this conference was very successful.  Finally I have a hope that these scholars can attend our seminar next year in Spain.  I especially hope that they can fully take advantage of the whole year to prepare, to publish research papers with even better quality.  Let these of us who pursue democracy walk step by step, until we achieve democracy and realize freedom in China.  This is my hope."
