Invitation to Attend the Second "Human Rights Without Borders" Exhibition and the Second "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" Prize Award Ceremony in the US Congress

 

Place: in the Foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building of the US Congress

Time: opening and award ceremony: 4:00pm - 6:00pm, Thursday, February 11, 2016

Exhibition: 9:00am - 7:00pm, Thursday, February 11 & Friday, February 12, 2016

 

On Thursday, February 11, 2016, the second "Human Rights Without Borders" exhibition and the second ceremony awarding the "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" Prize of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation will be held in the foyer of Rayburn House Office Building of the US Congress. These events are co-sponsored by:

The Wei Jingsheng Foundation

The European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress

Reporters Without Boarders

Freedom House

International Campaign for Tibet

IFCSS (Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars, USA)

 

This time, the "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" Prize by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation will be awarded to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Robert L. Bernstein, for their decades-long devotion and effort to improve human rights and freedom all over the world, especially China.

 

Members of the Congress, as well as the members of the human rights organizations, and people who support and are interested of the progress of freedom, human rights and democracy in the world will participate.  All the events on that day will be open to the general public.

 

The leaders of the human rights organizations who will present and speak at the exhibition opening and award ceremony on Thursday, February 11, include:

Wei Jingsheng, President of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation

Antoine Ripoll, head of the European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress

Matteo Mecacci, President of the International Campaign for Tibet

Delphine Halgand, Director of Reporters Without Borders, USA

Sarah Cook, Senior Research Analyst for East Asia, Freedom House

Carl Gershman, President of the National Endowment for Democracy

 

A reception with hors d'oeuvre and drinks will be served from 4pm to 7pm

 

The Exhibition and materials distributed this year will feature:

the human rights issues in Tibet,

the Umbrella Movement and the downward trend of freedom in Hong Kong, and

recent detentions of hundreds of human rights activists and lawyers in China,

as well as the European Parliament's 25th anniversary of the Sakharov Prize and its Laureates, and its efforts on human rights, equality, freedom, and democracy; and materials related to the 75th anniversary of the Freedom House, as well as its recently published report of Freedom of the World in 2015.

 

In addition, there will be an Asia Democracy Alliance seminar from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on February 11th in Rayburn 2103 (across from the Rayburn foyer).  Asian Community leaders and activists as well as experts on Asia will give talks about the current situation in Asia.  This seminar is also a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the founding of this alliance.

本届魏京生基金会“人权自由卫士奖”将颁发给美国众议院民主党领袖南希·佩洛西(Nancy Pelosi)女士和鲍勃·伯恩斯坦(Robert Bernstein)先生,以表彰他们几十年来为改善世界各地尤其是中国的人权和自由所做的奉献和努力。

 

届时将有美国国会议员及支持世界自由、人权和民主的个人及人权组织参加。全天的活动都将对公众开放。

 

参加2月11日(周四)的展览开幕式和颁奖仪式并发言的人权组织的领袖们包括:

香港的雨伞运动及其日益下降的自由指数,及

近期来数百名中国维权人士和律师的被拘留;

以及欧洲议会有关萨哈罗夫奖25周年庆祝及其获奖者们的资料,及其推动人权、平等、自由和民主的努力和工作的介绍;以及自由之家成立75周年庆祝,及有关其最近公布的2015年度世界自由评价的材料。

 

此外,2月11日下午1:30到下午3:30,在美国国会众议院雷伯恩办公大楼大堂对面的2103房间,亚洲民主联盟将举办一场亚洲民主研讨会及该联盟成立十周年的庆祝活动。亚裔社区领袖和活动家以及亚洲问题专家们将报告和讨论亚洲局势。
