The Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition Protests the Chinese Authorities Arresting People Across the Border and Calls Attention to the Deterioration of Human Rights in Hong Kong

(Washington, DC, February 13, 2016) Today, the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition issued a statement strongly protesting the Communist regime's trampling damage to Hong Kong's "One Country, Two Systems" Principle.  It calls on the international community to be concerned of the further deterioration of human rights in Hong Kong.

As one of the important topics of this thirteenth conference, the representatives from Canada-Hong Kong Link and Toronto Association for Democracy in China spoke about the plight of current human rights and rule of law in Hong Kong, as well as the support and solidarity that the overseas Chinese democracy movement should give to people of Hong Kong.

Bo Lee, one shareholder of the Causeway Bay Bookstore was recently escorted to Mainland China from Hong Kong without the legal proceedings of Hong Kong.  The Chinese authorities acknowledged that four other missing shareholders and employees of the bookstore are also in Mainland China to accept so-called "criminal investigation".

Wei Jingsheng, the chairman of the coalition, pointed out that the illegal arrests and detentions of these shareholders and clerks of the Causeway Bay Bookstore by the Communist regime across the border is a big setback of human rights in Hong Kong, a serious violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, and is undermining the "one country, two systems" principle promised by the Communist regime.

He said that the perversion of the Communist regime is waking more people in Hong Kong, and making them realize that people in Mainland China and people in Hong Kong are really closely related and share the same fate on the defense of human rights issues.

The Overseas Chinese Democracy strongly condemns the Chinese authorities ignoring the concerns of the international community and brazenly cross-border kidnapping these people.  The coalition calls on the Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the five kidnapped persons include Bo Lee; meanwhile the Chinese authorities should guarantee to the people of Hong Kong it will ensure effective compliance with the Hong Kong Basic Law, and let the law enforcement inside Hong Kong will only be carried out by the law enforcement officers of Hong Kong, and the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong people should be protected.

The 13th conference of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition opened in the Rayburn House Office Building of the US Congress on February 12, 2016, and ended on February 13, 2016.

On February 11, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, the European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress and other organizations held the second "Human Rights Without Borders" exhibition in the foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building, to show the public and the media displays of the human rights issue in Hong Kong and Tibet.

In the afternoon of that day, US Congressional members, European and American politicians, members from non-governmental organizations and overseas Chinese democracy activists participated in the second "Human Rights and Freedom Defender" prize ceremony of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, when prizes were awarded to the House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Mr. Robert L. Bernstein.

An Asia Democracy Alliance seminar was held in the same building, which had participating activists from Tibet, Xinjiang/East Turkistan, Hong Kong, Myanmar/Burma, Vietnam and Mainland China, etc.
