Notice of Cultural Revolution Seminar on May 13 and 14, 2016

On May 13th (Friday) and 14th (Saturday), the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the Wei Jingsheng Foundation are planning to hold a seminar on "The 50th Anniversary of the Cultural Revolution" that is marked on May 16.  We are planning to invite all friends to join us, to tell us their own experience and perspective of this subject.  For those who could join us in person, please contact the Wei Jingsheng Foundation at HCP@WeiJingSheng.org and register, and include your biographical and contact information for ratification.  For those friends who cannot join us in person, you may send your essay to us for it to be circulated as a document during the seminar and/or to be published later.

The organizers of the seminar think:

The Cultural Revolution is not only a continuation of the May Fourth Movement, but also the continuation of the learning of modern Western "Complete Westernization" thinking in China.  In the cultural and political systems, most Chinese people took an attitude of quick success and immediate benefit; while the intelligentsia took an irresponsible attitude, by guiding the Chinese with self-righteousness and little knowledge.  With the intervention from Japan and the former Soviet Union, it resulted in unnecessary twists and turns in nearly a hundred years of history in China.

Power struggles are the sub-themes of the Cultural Revolution.  The biggest theme of the Cultural Revolution was the implementation of the most radical communist ideal from the West.  The "Destruction of the Four Olds" destroyed the traditional Chinese culture and was a continuation of the "Complete Westernization" thought.  "Class Struggle" was a tool that matured in the Soviet authoritarian rule.  Establishing a serf-like structure of industrial and agricultural production system was a reactionary measure against the traditional market economy and freedmen society in China.  When Mao Zedong eventually won the supreme religious authority, it also proved the failure of Communism in China -- unless he could always make people willingly give up spiritual freedom and accept impoverishment in their material life.

Since the 1980s, the repression of the Deng Xiaoping clique resulted a lack of thorough and careful reflection of the Cultural Revolution.  In order to maintain its dictatorial and authoritarian system, the Communist regime in China does not allow people to seriously reflect on the reasons of this evil generating history, so now people are worried about another Cultural Revolution by the Chinese Communist regime.  The purpose of this seminar is to let more people understand the evil reasons of the Cultural Revolution, and to rally together to prevent the occurrence of a second Cultural Revolution.
