Voice of America's "Issues and Opinions" Program: Hot Debate between Wei Jingsheng and Sima Nan about the Cultural Revolution

Washington -

As the Cultural Revolution in China has come to its 50th anniversary, there has been a surge of the fans of Mao Zedong with a strong flavor of offering sacrifice under Mao's flag. At the same time, liberal intellectuals and democracy activists in China and overseas have also launched a new round of criticism and new reflections on the Cultural Revolution. Late last night, the Communist Party media "People's Daily" published an article on its official microblog. In this article, it says that "we must never forget the historic lessons of the 'Cultural Revolution'; firmly uphold the political conclusion the Communist Party has about 'the Cultural Revolution'; and resolutely prevent and combat the interference from both the 'left side' and the 'right side' regarding 'the Cultural Revolution.' We must neither take the old closed and rigid road, nor go astray to take a road that would change the flag, but continue unswervingly to take the socialist road with Chinese characteristics."

Exactly what kind of movement was the Cultural Revolution 50 years ago? What kind of profound impact did that movement have on the Chinese economic voyage and political environment in the past 40 years? Are the genes of the Cultural Revolution still alive in Chinese societies now? Does the conclusion of the ruling political party about that unprecedented movement cause divisions within Chinese society? When will the historic time arrive to completely judge and evaluate the Cultural Revolution? Today, the Issues and Opinions program invites three honored guests to join us to discuss these issues. These guests who join us at the VOA studio are:

Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition; and

Huang Ciping, executive director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation; and

Sima Nan, a scholar who supports Mao Zedong, who is joining us through Skype from VOA's Beijing bureau. We welcome the three guests!
