This
image had circled the world. Shortly after
his release, the most famous Chinese dissident was able to call the Chinese
Leader Jiang Zemin through a megaphone, from the balcony of Lyon Capitale.
In
1999, Raymond Barre received the top Chinese leader Jiang Zemin. Despite an
impressive security system, Wei Jingsheng, who was freed two years earlier from
China under international pressure, escaped the general intelligence and
succeeded -- thanks to a traboule (special passageway in Lyon) obviously
unknown to the police -- to slip into the premises Of Lyon Capitale on rue
Puits-Gaillot with its balcony overlooking the Place des Terreaux. For the first
time in his life, his oppressor was within reach of megaphone. Wei Jingsheng
announced the inevitable collapse of the Chinese Communist regime and the
advent of democracy.
The
GIPN at the windows of Lyon Capitale
Two
years later, this was repeated. It was now
Gérard Collomb (Mayor of Lyon) at the city hall with Hu Jintao, who was about
to become the top Chinese leader. The editorial office of Lyon Capitale
recorded a new message from Wei Jingsheng, engraved on CD and distributed with
the newspaper. Everywhere on the passage of the procession, our readers
opened their windows and raised the volume thoroughly to broadcast the speech
of the dissident. To cover this noise, the official procession was preceded by
a pickup truck equipped with equipment worthy of the circus Pinder to overcome
Wei Jingsheng’s message. But at the Place des Terreaux, while the offices of Lyon
Capitale were literally besieged by a GIPN (National Police Intervention
Groups) team fully armed at the door and windows, ready to jump -- the editor
managed to conceal a loudspeaker in an attic to trigger the deafening message
on Hu's arrival. The arrival was then interrupted on the red carpet of the
stairs of the town hall.

L’image avait alors
fait le tour du monde. Peu après sa libération, le plus célèbre des dissidents
chinois a pu interpeller au mégaphone le numéro 1 chinois Jiang Zemin, depuis
le balcon de Lyon Capitale.
EN 1999, Raymond Barre reçoit en grande
pompe le numéro un chinois, Jiang Zemin. Malgré un dispositif de sécurité
impressionnant, Wei Jingsheng, libéré deux ans plus tôt par la Chine sous la
pression internationale, échappe à la filature des renseignements généraux et
parvient – grâce à une traboule manifestement inconnue des services de police –
à se glisser dans les locaux de Lyon Capitale, rue Puits-Gaillot, dont le
balcon donne sur la place des Terreaux. Pour la première fois de sa vie, son
oppresseur est à portée de mégaphone. Wei Jingsheng lui annonce l’effondrement inéluctable
du Parti communiste chinois et l’avènement de la démocratie.
Le GIPN aux fenêtres de Lyon Capitale
Deux ans plus tard, bis
repetita. C’est désormais Gérard Collomb qui trône à l’hôtel de ville et
Hu Jintao qui s’apprête à devenir le numéro un chinois. La rédaction de Lyon
Capitale a enregistré un nouveau message de Wei Jingsheng, gravé sur CD et
distribué avec le journal. Partout sur le passage du cortège, nos lecteurs
ouvrent leurs fenêtres et poussent la sono à fond pour faire entendre la parole
du dissident. Pour couvrir ce bruit, le cortège officiel est devancé par une
camionnette équipée d’un matériel digne du cirque Pinder, qui diffuse de la
musique chinoise. Mais, place des Terreaux, alors que les bureaux de Lyon
Capitale sont littéralement assiégés – avec une équipe du GIPN armée d’une
hache à la porte et une autre devant les fenêtres, montée sur des nacelles et
prête à bondir – une partie de la rédaction qui a réussi à dissimuler une sono
de concert dans un grenier déclenche l’assourdissant message à l’arrivée de Hu.
Lequel, interloqué, marque un temps d’arrêt sur le tapis rouge des escaliers de
l’hôtel de ville.
