On International Human Rights Day, Democracy Activists Called for Freedom in China

(Epoch Times, December 12, 2017) (Reporter Xu Xiuhui from Los Angeles) On December 10 International Human Rights Day, more than 200 people who care about and support Chinese democracy gathered in Los Angeles to participate in the 31st anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation and the 10th anniversary of the founding of Humanitarian China.

Huang Qi and Yang Tianshui Won the Outstanding Democrat Award

The 31st Outstanding Democrat Prize of the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation was jointly won by Huang Qi, the founder of the "June 4th Network" website and Yang Tianshui, a dissident from the Mainland and member of the Independent Chinese PEN.  Because Huang Qi is still in jail as being persecuted by the Communist regime, Wang Min, chairman of the National Headquarters of the Chinese Democratic Party, accepted the award on Huang Qi's behalf.  Wang Min said that he knew Huang Qi through the connection when he was broadcasting in Taiwan.  Wang thinks that Huang Qi is truly admirable as, even though he was in jail, he still made the "June 4th Network" to work normally by gathering a group of people in Sichuan who cared about Chinese democracy and made their contributions to freedom of speech in China.

Fang Zheng, president of the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation, said the foundation was founded in San Francisco in 1985 and has presented awards annually to individuals or activities since 1986 for outstanding contribution to promoting democracy and the rule of law in China, and safeguarding human rights and freedom.

Unfortunately, the other winner Yang Tianshui died of brain cancer on November 7.  As Yang Tienshui was jailed by the Communist regime for nearly 21 years and died just one month before his scheduled release, some people even question his "medical parole" had become "Notice of Death" as a result of the "old trick" by the Communist regime, which is to torture Yang Tianshui both physically and mentally in prison, until he finally was persecuted to death.

Wei Jingsheng: "Preaching" from the Overseas Democrats Is Very Important

Wei Jingsheng, winner of the first Chinese Democracy Education Foundation award, came to Los Angeles from Washington DC to participate in the activity.  He said although many people question if the democracy movement is able to act from overseas, it is a reality that many people are actually doing "preaching and resolving confusion" from overseas.  He said that most people did not dare to say "I oppose the Communist Party" 30 years ago, but now most Chinese think that a society without the Communist regime must be better than a Communist dictatorial regime.

Wei Jingsheng said that because we are overseas, we have the conditions and opportunities to speak for the democrats inside China and to make their voices heard.  Wei said that the voices in China are first transmitted overseas, then the democrats overseas "feed these exported voices back to the whole China".  He said that "democracy" is a fundamental work, while education is not just a school, but also a real tool to truly spread the message to let people feel democracy and freedom in their lives.  Wei Jingsheng said: "Without freedom, there will be suffering; without democracy, our rights will be denied.  China needs 'the rule of law' that benefits everyone, not the 'rule by law of the Communist' that the Communist regime uses to confine people."

Cheng Xiang, a veteran journalist from Hong Kong who was accused of "suspected espionage" by the Communist regime and jailed for 5 years, also presented at the event that day.  Other attendants included a number of awardees of the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation and their families.  Jin Bianling, wife of Jiang Tianyong, and Wang Yanfang, wife of Tang Jingling said that they hope society will pay wide attention to the fact that Chinese human rights lawyers have been subjected to illegal sentences by the Communist regime and help to rescue these victimized 709 lawyers.

Fang Zheng said that over many years, the Chinese Democracy Education Foundation has also overcome many different difficulties.  This time, it moved its activities from San Francisco to Los Angeles because there are many friends in Los Angeles who continually support democratic activities in China.  Some of the key personnel of both organizations are also in Los Angeles.

Humanitarian China Practices the Bottom Line of Humanity

Ge Xun, the former president of Humanitarian China, said: "Humanity is the most basic bottom line."  When the Chinese Communists lack the bottom line of humanity through ways of freezing the resident registrations of democrats and making their families lose their financial resources in an attempt to starve their children, Humanitarian China transfers money to China from their overseas relations, so that these democrats have the money to buy milk powder for their children.  Humanitarian China pressured the Chinese communists through overseas fundraising and public opinion to help these democrats inside of China.

Zhou Fengsuo, the present president of Humanitarian China, said because of limited resources, for many years it has been relying on the support and solidarity of friends who support Chinese democracy to enable many people who share the same experience as Fang Zheng to continue their normal life in the USA.  Continuing its work for democracy and help the children of the Chinese democrats who are suffering in China, is the goal of Humanitarian China.
