Wei Jingsheng, Wu Zuolai, and Deng Yuwen Invited to Attend Radio Free Asia's China Live Program: Fifty Years of "Going To the Mountains and the Countryside," Does China Need a New Round of Ideological Liberation?

Published on June 29, 2018

On June 29, 2018, Wei Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, was invited to participate in a discussion on the China Live program hosted by Radio Free Asia's He Ping.  The main subjects of the program were: Fifty years of "going to the mountains and the countryside" and does China need a new round of ideological liberation?  Other guests participating in the program included: Wu Zuolai, a scholar and columnist in the United States; and Deng Yuwen, an independent scholar in China.  The following is a brief introduction by Radio Free Asia at the beginning of the program.

Starting in the 1950s, the educated youth's "going to the mountains and the countryside" movement was part of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.  It has been 50 years now.  The decentralization movement involved tens of millions of junior high and high school graduates in the cities being sent to the contryside.  Afterwards, it has been beautified as "the spirit of the educated youth" and "Youth with no regrets" by the official literary and artistic works.  However, in China today, do we really have the answers regarding the turbulence of the Cultural Revolution and the class divisions by their composition, i.e. the so-called three major differences between "worker and peasant, urban and rural, and physical and mental labor"?  Although Xi Jinping, who is also known as an educated youth, has achieved the strength of "leading everything", the Communist Party has once again resorted to Marxism to seek Chinese "characteristics" for the dictatorship.  Facing civil rights defenders, ethnic conflicts, and the upcoming US-China trade confrontation, does the Chinese society need a new round of ideological emancipation?  How far is democracy and the rule of law from China?  These are the topics that are explored in this program.

Published on June 29, 2018
