[RFA China Live] The Leftists United to Challenge Beijing?  Malaysia's Withdrawal From One Belt One Road Indicates China On a Setback? (2018/08/24)

-- Radio Free Asia

Friday, August 24, 2018

On August 24, 2018, Mr. Wei Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, participated in the China Live Program hosted by Free Asia Radio Shishan: "The Leftists United to Challenge Beijing?  Malaysia's Withdrawal From One Belt One Road Indicates China Is On a Setback?"  Another invited guest was Mr. Cai Chongguo.  The following is an introduction of the program by Radio Free Asia.

Shenzhen Jasic Technology had a small-scale labor dispute in July.  However, it has aroused great concern from all parties.  The reason is that solidarity groups of people from all over China came to Shenzhen to join the workers, most of them publicly claiming to be leftists who believe the track of Marxist and Mao Zedong's Thoughts.  They included a large number of young people and the so-called Maoists within the Communist leadership.  Does this kind of cooperation and integration between the New Leftists and the Old Leftists in China touch the deep contradictions within the Communist leadership?  Will it pose an even bigger challenge to the current political power in Beijing than the liberals?

On the other hand, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad visited China.  On August 21 the last day of his visit in China, he announced in Beijing that Malaysia has cancelled a number of projects funded by China, including 20 billion US dollars worth of high-speed rail along the eastern coast and a natural gas pipeline project from Sabah to Malacca.  Earlier, Mahathir said at a joint press conference with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on the morning of the 20th that he "does not want to see the emergence of new colonialism," and "the exchange with the big powers must be fair trade" and so on.

Malaysia was the first country to take part in the "China One Belt, One Road" initiative and is now the first country to announce its withdrawal from the big project as well.  What impact does Malaysia's withdrawal have on China's so-called "century strategy"?  What kind of political and economic risks does China face in its large investments?  This program is to explore these topics.
