Xie Yining, Chairman of the Pro-Beijing China Press in the USA, Shot Dead by His Subordinate -- Voice of America

Note by editor Huang Ciping:

On November 16, 2018, Xie Yining, the chairman of the China Press, which is affiliated to the State Council of China, was shot dead in California.  One day later, I sent a tweet after I learned the news on my way back from New York City (https://twitter.com/huang_ciping/status/1064266119589109762):

"My emotions were stirred up when I read about the death of Xie Yining, the chair of the China Press.  The media said that he was the founder of the China Press, which is not quite accurate.  In fact, as a leader of the propaganda and funded by the Chinese Communist regime, this newspaper has been published overseas for decades.  However, after the June 4 massacre in 1989, even the staff of this newspaper condemned the massacre and thus its funding was terminated by the Communist Party.  In early 1990, only six months after the massacre, Xie Yining violated universal moral codes and took the lead in cleaning up and making up for the Communist regime.  He was a most shameless person."

In less than a day, I received more than 400 retweets and praises for my tweet.  After that, I accepted an interview with the Voice of America.  Since then, I have read more than two hundred related comments on my tweet, the re-tweets, as well as the comments from the Voice of America report, most condemn a person who would work for his personal interest by betray his conscience.  I am very moved to the fact that despite the high pressure from the Communist regime and the deception of its propaganda machines such as China Press, people make justice with their hearts and the public opinion cannot be deceived.

The following is the report by Voice of America on the subject.

Xie Yining, Chairman of the Pro-Beijing China Press in the USA, Shot Dead by His Subordinate

-- by Xiao Yu, Voice of America

Washington -

"When our newspaper was first founded in San Francisco, someone threatened to beat me.  I also received a phone call saying, 'When you walk out of the elevator door someday, you will die there. '"  In an article written by Xie Yining, chairman of the China Press, he described the threat he received in the early 1990s.

What he said indeed became prophetic.

Last Friday on November 16, a shooting murder case was reported in the China Press building in the suburbs of Los Angeles.  At the age of 58, Xie Yining fell to his death under the gun of a subordinate.  The gunman was subsequently arrested and the motive for the crime is still under investigation.

Xie Yining was born in Guangdong in 1960.  He graduated from the Journalism Department of Renmin University of China in 1982 and later joined the China News Agency as a reporter.  At the age of 26, he was sent to and stationed in the United States in April 1987, as the youngest of the Chinese expatriate journalists.

According to his own memories, in 1991 he went to San Francisco to establish the China Press on the West Coast of the USA.

Huang Ciping, executive director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, told the Voice of America that the predecessor of the China Press (Chinese name as "Qiao Bao") was called "Overseas China Press" (Chinese name as: "Hua Qiao Ri Bao") and belonged to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council in China.

"After the June 4th massacre in 1989, all overseas Chinese newspapers condemned and protested it, including the "Overseas China Press".  Other newspapers survived, but the funding for this newspaper was cut off by the Communist regime, so it closed its doors.  At that time everyone felt shameful to have contact with the Chinese government.  But he (Xie Yining) restore this newspaper and got money from the State Council."

Xie Yining said that in order to start the newspaper, his home was smashed, and some people shot at their office building in Los Angeles.  More than ten employees' cars were also smashed.

On the second day of Xie Yining's death, the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles issued a statement expressing "deep mourning" to Xie Yining's family and expressing "sincere condolences" to all employees of the China Press.

The Chinese Consulate's statement wrote, "Under the leadership of Mr. Xie Yining, China Press has made important contributions to expanding information dissemination, serving overseas Chinese, promoting the development of Chinese media, and enhancing mutual understanding between Chinese and American people.  We believe that all employees of the newspaper will unite as one and share the difficulties."

Earlier, the close relationship between China Press and the Chinese officials had actually aroused the vigilance of all walks of life in the United States.

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, an American journalist who is concerned about the overseas influence of the Chinese Communist Party, said that after the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, the Communist Party realized that its global image was damaged.  Its United Front Department and other agencies began to work hard to get out of China, and to contact and guide overseas Chinese and communities all over the world.

"In the 1990s, a group of Chinese affiliated with Chinese official media and the United Front Department were sent to the United States to create pro-Beijing Chinese media.  These media claimed to be "independent," but the reality is not," she said.

According to a report of the Jamestown Foundation, a Washington think tank, all the main Chinese newspapers, "China Press", "Sing Tao Daily", "Ming Pao" and "World Journal" have financial or management links with the Chinese government.  Of these newspapers, China Press has its positions as the most obviously leaning towards the Communist Party.  This newspaper uses simplified characters (used by the Mainlanders), and hires employees from Mainland China.  The report said that in the sample they extracted, the China Press did not have articles publicly criticize China, indicating that it conducted a self-censorship.

Xie Yining himself said in the late 1990s that he limited what a reporter could report:  first, one was not allowed to speak or act in a way that is separate the country.  Second, if reports reflected on the dark side of Chinese society, he would ask his men to conduct in-depth investigations to see if they were true.

According to a report by the Hudson Institute of the US think tank, there are about 4.9 million Chinese in the United States, and about 50% of them have limited English proficiency.  Therefore, Chinese media still play an important role in influencing these people's views.

As of Monday's release of this report, the China Press has not responded to the requests of the Voice of America reporter.
