Program: Xi Thoughts "Guide" the Human Rights Road, One Person to
Determine the US-China Trade War?
On
November 10, 2018, Wei Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy
Coalition, was invited to participate in a discussion on the China Live program
hosted by Radio Free Asia's He Ping.
The main subjects of the program were: Xi Thoughts "Guide" the
Human Rights Road, One Person to Determine the US-China Trade War? Other guests participating in the
program included: Hu Jia, a rights defender in Beijing; and Teng Biao, a
visiting scholar at New York University.
The following is a brief introduction by Radio Free Asia at the
beginning of the program.
This
week, the periodic review of the Chinese human rights situation by the UN Human
Rights Council is being held in Geneva, Switzerland. Once again, the Chinese
government's use of the so-called re-education concentration camp in Xinjiang
and forcing large-scale detention of Muslim minorities has become the focus of
public opinion. Faced with
questions from the European and American countries about the suppression of
basic human rights by the Chinese authorities, especially various concerns of
the freedom of citizens' speech and religious beliefs in Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong
Kong, etc., Chinese government made high-profile claims that China is guided by
Xi Jinping's thoughts and always takes the human rights development road with
the Chinese characteristics. Can
the UN human rights mechanism have any influence on China under the rule of the
Communist Party? Should Chinese
civil rights be in accordance with universal standards, or should they bear
Xi's thoughts to guide all? In
addition, the US midterm elections were conducted this week. How much will the results affect the
trade and strategic confrontation between the United States and China? This is also of particular
concern. These are the topics that
are explored in this program.
