Wei Jingsheng Speaks at the Second International Human Rights Art Festival in New York City

On the evening of Friday November 16, 2018, Wei Jingsheng and Huang Ciping attended the Second International Human Rights Art Festival in New York City, produced by Tom Block. Wei Jingsheng was one of the honorary co-sponsors of this event. He gave a speech there and also gave a TV interview. The following is his speech at the event.

I always enjoy to be with the artists. That is because art is always associated with humanity, freedom, and liberation. In addition to letting people feel pleasure, art can also convey the spirit of humanity and freedom. It gives people a spiritual liberation and a release for their depressed mood.

Forty years ago, when the Chinese launched the modern democracy movement for the first time, there were a large number of artists around us. The artists then felt the repression of humanity by the dictatorship of the Communist regime and the distortion of art. The Chinese people needed a liberation of spirit and rights. Chinese artists today also need the liberation of spirit and art. Those artists were powerful to strike the distorted and suppressive art promulgated by the Chinese officials. These artists also created the new Chinese contemporary art which became the mainstream.

True art is always the ally of human rights, democracy and freedom. The liberation of politics, the liberation of the economy and the liberation of art are mutually connecting and mutually reinforcing causes. Let us continue to work hard in the common cause and strive for a better future of the mankind.

魏京生在纽约参加第二届国际人权艺术节并应邀讲话

11月16日傍晚，魏京生和黄慈萍到纽约参加了第二届国际人权艺术节。魏京生应邀发表了讲话并接受了电视采访。以下为讲话内容。

和艺术家们在一起总会感到非常愉快。因为艺术总是和人性、自由、解放联系在一起。除了给人以愉悦的感觉，还能传达人道和自由的精神。给人以精神上的解放，释放郁闷的心情。

四十年前，当中国人第一次发动现代民主运动的时候，我们周围就活动者一大批艺术家。他们也感受着共产党独裁专制对人性的压抑，对艺术的扭曲。中国人民需要精神和权利的解放，艺术家们也需要精神和艺术的解放。对官方扭曲压抑的愚民艺术，他们是强有力地冲击者，并且创造了中国当代新艺术的主流。

真正的艺术，永远是人权、民主和自由的同盟者。政治的解放，经济的解放和艺术的解放，是相辅相成、互相连接的事业。让我们在共同的事业中继续努力，争取人类更美好的未来。
