The
Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Fifteenth Annual "Wei Jingsheng
Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award
December

Since
2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th. In the last fourteen years the awarding
of this prize has had reverberations around the world. Those people persisting in the fight
for freedom and democracy in China, who are at any moment in danger of
persecution by the dictatorial regime, have thus been encouraged and consoled.
As
can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have
nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese democracy and
freedom. Nominating someone in and
of itself is a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those
unknown, untiring democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and
fortune. We have great respect for
their strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made. As in the past 14 years, we received
many excellent recommendations this year from our friends inside China and
overseas. This year, two candidates
making it into the final consideration were excellent and it was as ever a
challenge to distinguish and select the best.
In
the more than six years since Xi Jinping took over power, political repression
has deepened day by day in China, leading to the deteriorating economic and
social situation in China. Freedom
of speech has been further restricted, even on the Internet. Since Xi Jinping lifted the term limit
by modifying the so-called Constitution in China earlier this year, a political
suppression even worse than the Cultural Revolution in China has started. Today, China under the brutal
exploitation and oppression of bureaucratic capitalism headed by the Communist
Party finally encountered a trade war with the USA, which bring chance and
opportunity. Meanwhile, various
ethnic conflicts and class contradictions have been highlighted by the
concentration camps set up by the Communist regime in areas like Xinjiang,
which reminded us Nazi's ethnic cleansing against the Jewish people.
As
this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Democracy Wall in Beijing,
especially on December 5, 1978 when Wei Jingsheng posted his world known essay
"The Fifth Modernization - Democracy", we are reminded that there is
still a long and difficult road to democracy after 40 years of "reform and
opening-up" in China. What
has happened in China in the past 40 years was an economically deformed
opening-up, yet without political reforms. We also want to remind people that the call for political
change not has not only happened in Beijing, but also all over China, just as
the call for democracy in China was not just happening on the Democracy Wall in
Beijing 40 years ago, but also echoed by people elsewhere in China then. A full economic opening up and true
political reform must be realized in China!
Today,
the Wei Jingsheng Democracy Champion Prize Judging Committee announces the
recipient of this year's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion
Prize" to be Mr. Zhu Yufu.
Zhu
was recommended by his decades long time friend Ms. Chen Liqun, whom herself is
a long time democracy activist well respected. Zhu Yufu was born on February 13, 1953. He lives in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang
Province. He was the property
manager of the Fuxing Community of the Chengnan Housing Management Station of
the Shangcheng District Housing Authority in Hangzhou. He was one of the founders of the
Chinese Democratic Party in 1998.
He has been a dissident and a political prisoner in China for decades.
From
1978 to 1979, Zhu Yufu actively established the "May 4th" monthly
magazine and participated in the leadership of the Democracy Wall Movement in
Hangzhou. In 1989, Zhu Yufu was
summoned, his house was searched, and he was detained for 27 days for his
support of the "democracy movement by the students". In June 1998, he was active in
preparing to establish the Chinese Democratic Party, for which he was detained
on June 19, 1999. He was formally
arrested on September 15 in 1999 and was finally sentenced to 7 years in prison
for "subverting state power" and deprived of political rights for 3
years. On September 15, 2006, after
he was released from prison, he continued to devote himself to promoting
democracy in China. On May 18,
2007, he was arrested again. On
July 10 of the same year, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison by the
Shangcheng District Court of Hangzhou City for "obstruction of official
duties" until May 2009. On
March 5, 2011, he was detained again for publicly supported the Chinese Jasmine
Revolution and wrote a poem entitled "It's Time". For the third time, he was arrested by
the Hangzhou Police for allegedly "inciting subversion of state
power." His home was searched
and two computers were confiscated.
On April 11, 2011, he was formally arrested on the same accusation and
detained at the Shangcheng District Detention Center in Hangzhou. On February 10, 2012, he was sentenced
to 7 years in prison and deprived of political rights for 3 years again by the
Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court of Zhejiang Province in the name of
"Inciting subversion of state power". It was reported several times that he was inhumanly tortured
in the prison. During the prison
sentence, he was beaten by the prison guards and repeatedly bullied and abused
by the prisoners.

This
year's award to Mr. Zhu Yufu is a salute to all the people who actively devoted
themselves to the modern democracy movement in China since the Democracy Wall
40 years ago. The wave of Beijing
Spring was not just in Beijing, but all over China, which was the call of the
Chinese people all these years. It
is also a salute to all the martyrs and heroes who opposed the Communist
dictatorship, as well as the tens of millions of Chinese who have been
victimized and killed by the Communist regime in China during the past almost 7
decades.
The
total prize pooled together this year is US$ 3,500. Those who donated money are donating their passion and
belief in Chinese democracy. For
this passion we want to express our deepest gratitude. In addition, we also want to express
our appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees for our fifteenth
annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize". We thank all of you for your support

魏京生基金会第十五届“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”颁发公告
自2004年以来，每年12月5日魏京生基金会都会颁发“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”。过去十四次的颁奖在世界范围引起了很大的反响。对于正在中国坚持奋斗、随时都有危险的人们，是很大的鼓励与支持。
毫无疑义，被提名人为中国的民主和自由做出了卓越的贡献。提名本身就是对所有民主斗士，包括那些默默无闻、坚持不懈、不计名利的勇士们的牺牲精神的赞扬。和往年一样，今年我们也收到十来个来自国内外朋友们的优秀推荐。从最终的两位极其优秀的入围者选择出获奖人并非易事。
习近平上台六年多来，中国的政治压制日益加深，导致中国经济和社会形势的进一步恶化。即使在互联网上，言论自由也已受到进一步的限制。自从今年年初习近平通过修改中国所谓的宪法并取消了任期制以来，一场比中国文化大革命更加险恶的政治打压已经开始。如今，以共产党为首的官僚资本主义的残酷剥削和压迫下的中国，终于遭遇到了与美国的贸易战，为中国人民带来了机遇。与此同时，中共统治下各种民族矛盾和阶级矛盾更加尖锐。中共在新疆等地设立的集中营，让人们想起当年纳粹对犹太民族的种族清洗。
今年是北京民主墙诞生40周年。今天更是1978年12月5日魏京生发表他的世界闻名的文章"第五次现代化 - 民主"的四十周年。然而在“改革开放”四十年的今天，我们看到的却是在中国实现民主的道路还很长很艰巨的现实。过去40年来，中国的经济并没有真正开放，中国的政治更没有改革。40年前，全国人民热切地回应了北京的民主墙，在全国各地都爆发了要求民主的呼声；如今，不仅北京的人民呼吁政改，全中国人民都意识并呼吁政改。全面的经济开放与真正的政治改革必须在中国实现!
今天，“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”评委会宣布今年“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”的获得者为朱虞夫先生。推荐者为多年从事民运的女中豪杰陈立群女士。
朱虞夫，1953年2月13日出生，浙江省杭州市人，前杭州市上城区房管局城南房管站复兴社区物业管理员。他是1998年中国民主党创办者之一，异议人士，中国曾押政治犯。
1978年至1979年，朱虞夫曾积极组建《四五》月刊并参与领导杭州民主墙运动。1989年，他曾因声援“学运”被传唤、抄家，并被关押27天。1998年6月，朱虞夫因积极筹备中国民主党组建工作，1999年6月19日被拘留，同年9月15日正式逮捕，最终被当局以“颠覆国家政权罪”判处有期徒刑7年，剥夺政治权利3年。2006年9月15日出狱后，他继续投身宣传民主理念；2007年5月18日，再次被抓捕，同年7月10日，被杭州市上城区法院以“妨害公务罪”判处有期徒刑2年，至2009年5月刑满出狱。2011年3月5日，因公开支持中国茉莉花革命，并撰写发布一首题为《是时候了》的诗歌，第三次被杭州市警方以涉嫌“煽动颠覆国家政权罪”刑拘，其家被查抄、2台电脑被没收。同年4月11日，朱虞夫被以同罪名正式逮捕，关押于杭州上城区看守所。2012年2月10日，朱虞夫被浙江省杭州市中级法院以“煽动颠覆国家政权罪”判处有期徒刑7年，剥夺政治权利3年。据悉，此前几度入狱均遭狱方非人道酷刑虐待，服刑时曾被狱警殴打及被牢头狱霸多次欺侮虐待。

今年对朱虞夫先生的奖励也是对民主墙以来40年的所有积极致力于中国现代民主运动的人们的致敬。当年的北京之春不仅发生在北京，也发生在全中国，代表的是全中国人民的心声。而这次的颁奖也是对所有反抗中共专政的烈士和英雄的颁奖，是对过去近70年来中共政权下受害乃至被杀害的数千万中国人的致敬。
这次汇集的奖金总额为三千五百美元（US $3,500.00）。捐款的人们捐出的是他们对中国民主的热情和信念，在此我们表示衷心感谢。此外，我们也向第十五届“魏京生中国民主斗士奖”参与提名的所有朋友表示谢意。感谢您们的支持和鼓励。
