Building a Resting Place for the Souls of the "June 4th" Massacre, the World's Largest Tiananmen Monument Unveiled in California

-- VOA report

The world's largest monument commemorating the 1989 Democracy Movement on Tiananmen Square was unveiled in California, USA, on Saturday (February 23).  Nearly 200 people who supported the cause of democracy and freedom in China came from all over the world to attend the unveiling ceremony.  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the "June 4th" massacre.

The main body of the monument consists of two giant numbers, 6 and 4, strikingly located off Interstate 15 connecting Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The monument's creator and sculptor Chen Weiming told VOA that he and several friends joined forces to buy the 36-acre land, which is called the Liberty Sculpture Park with the theme of democracy, freedom and human rights, commemorating the souls of Communist victims in the world.

Talking about the design concept of the "June 4th" monument, Chen Weiming said: "This sculpture is 6.4 meters high, plus a 2.5-meter pedestal, for a total of exactly 8.9 meters high, with the meaning of commemorating the June 4 Massacre in 1989.  This park is 6,400 miles from Beijing, China, with its azimuth angle to be 64 degrees."

Chen Weiming said that in the future, they will also engrave the names of more than 200 people known to be killed during the June 4th Massacre that were collected by Ding Zilin, a "Tiananmen Mother", on the back of the monument base to let them be remembered by the world.

Thirty years ago, the Chinese government used machine guns and tanks to suppress the people's demands of ending corruption and peaceful demonstrations for democracy and freedom, which caused a bloody tragedy that shocked the world.

Chen Weiming said: "We don't want to forget the tragedy that occurred on 'June 4' 30 years ago.  That is the pain in the hearts of Chinese people."

Fang Zheng, both of whose legs were crushed by tanks during the June 4 massacre, came to the scene with his eldest daughter.  He said that such an occasion reminded him of the souls who died under the tanks of the Communist regime in LiuBuKou of Beijing.

"They never had a chance to see all this.  What we survivors can do is to let everyone not forget about them," Fang Zheng said.

Wei Jingsheng, a senior Chinese human rights activist in exile in the United States, said to the people assembled there: "For 30 years, we have not forgotten.  We are continuously striving hard.  There will be one day when freedom and democracy is realized in China."

The monument was unveiled 100 days before the 30th anniversary of the "June 4th" and thus also ushered in a series of commemorative events this year.

Chen Weiming told the Voice of America that a tank sculpture he is creating will meet the public on June 3.  In the future, two to three large-scale sculptures will be completed every year.  It is planned to build a memorial hall in the Liberty Sculpture Park five years later, on the 35th anniversary of the "June 4th" Massacre, to commemorate those who died of communist persecution.

"This will be their resting place," he said.
