Opening Remarks at the Artwork Exhibition Which Marks the 30th Anniversary of the June 4th Massacre in Beijing, in Front of the US Capitol in Washington, DC, USA

-- Huang Ciping

May 2, 2019, 2 pm to 5 pm

At the Union Square, in front of the US Capitol, Washington DC, USA

Today, we open the curtain to initiate the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the 6.4 Massacre in Washington DC through this art exhibition in front of the US Capitol.   It is co-sponsored by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, Humanitarian China, Liberty Sculpture Park, China Democracy Party National Committee, Los Angeles China Democratic Platform, China Freedom Alliance etc.  The exhibition includes more than 100 paintings about the 1989 Democracy Movement in China that have been accumulated since the June 4 Massacre in Beijing.  Washington is the third stop of the tour of these artworks.

Today, I am also hosting this event with a very heavy heart.  Because I just came back from Europe in an effort to investigate the unusual death of our fellow, Mr. Zhang Jian of Paris, who died in Munich on his way back from Thailand to Paris; and thus I requested the German officials to investigate.

Mr. Zhang Jian was an important active figure in the overseas Chinese democracy movement.  In 1989, he participated in the democracy movement and served as the director of the student picket team.  In May 2001, Zhang Jian went to exile in Paris, France.  Mr. Wei Jingsheng helped him to apply for political asylum successfully.  After that, he participated in the democracy movement often.  In July 2017 and June 2018, he came to participate in our activities in Europe.  Last October and February this year, I also met with him for hours to talk about the democracy movement, especially regarding the arranging of events for this year's 30th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre.  The 6.4 commemoration T-shirt I am wearing now received his advice and encouragement.

In the early morning of June 4, 1989, opposite the East Management Station of Tiananmen Square, which was surrounded by the Chinese army, Zhang Jian was shot when tried to protect the students.  The stray bullets shot by the Army officer hit his leg, resulting in fracture.  The bullet did not go through, and stayed in his body for 19 years.  In November 2008, the French Military Hospital in Paris took it out.  Zhang Jian said that he was the living evidence of the June 4 Massacre.  After he was shot on June 4th 1989, the students on Tiananmen Square sent Zhang Jian to the Beijing Tongren Hospital, and the other three people who went there with him in the same wagon all died.  Zhang Jian stayed in Tongren Hospital for 90 days due to his injuries.  The bullet taken from him, the X-ray photos, hospitalization bills, as well as discharge and diagnostic documents are now on display at the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong.

On April 16, 2019, Zhang Jian returned to Paris, France on Oman Air flight WY131.  The flight was diverted to Munich, Germany, as he got very ill.  He was sent to the hospital and died on April 18.

As the 30th anniversary of the 6.4 massacre is approaching, we will not be discouraged and will never give up even though we have lost Zhang Jian, one of the living testimonies of the 6.4 Massacre.  We will continue to commemorate the martyrs and inherit their will until the arrival of freedom and democracy in China.

Here, I want to end my opening remarks of this art exhibition with a poem of the netizen Hua Po in mourning of Zhang Jian:

As Zhang Jian passed away, the Internet filled with sadness;

I have no intersection with him, thus no memories;

But I know that if he was saved, he will go to heaven;.

I will catch him up with my blessings.

In my heart

He is a symbol, symbolizing the time on Tiananmen Square;

He is a commemoration, commemorating the years that generation experienced;

He is a representative, representing the Chinese exile overseas;

He is entrusted, to tell us to move forward anyway;

He is the hope, hoping his comrades take him back to his hometown that he has not seen for so long.

The 6.4th martyrs, rest in peace!  Zhang Jian, rest in peace!

What follow will be speeches by

Wei Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition;

Chen Weiming, the famous artist;

Wang Juntao, Chairman of the China Democracy Party National Committee, and

Xia Yeliang, the founder of the China Freedom Alliance.  Afterwards, we will be open to friends who want to speak at their will.
