On
June 14, 2019, Mr. WEI Jingsheng, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy
Coalition, participated in the "China Live" program hosted by Radio
Free Asia's He Ping on the topics: Is Hong Kong In Danger? Will or Will Not Xi Jinping Meet With
Donald Trump Regarding the Trade War? Guests who also participated in the
review were Mr. Albert HO Chun-yan, Chair of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of
Patriotic Democratic Movements in China; and Mr. XIA Ming, a professor at the
Graduate School of the City University of New York. The following is an introduction of the program by Radio
Free Asia.
This
week, Hong Kong had unprecedented "Against Extradition to China"
demonstrations, but they immediately became an open conflict between police and
civilians and were suppressed by force.
Although the deliberation of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance was
temporarily postponed, after the Chief Executive in Hong Kong and the Chinese
officials simultaneously characterized the peaceful demonstration as the
so-called "riot", the votes by the Legislative Council in Hong Kong
received particular attention. Why
did Hong Kong's revision of its Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, which resulted in
"Against Extradition to China" demonstrations become a focus? After the Umbrella Movement, the
Causeway Bay Bookstore Incident, the law to deprive the rights of Hong Kong's
legislators by the National People's Congress in Mainland China, and collective
sentences of all the leaders of the "occupation" movement in Hong
Kong, the so-called "one country, two systems" has resulted in which
kind of challenges against democracy and the rule of law in Hong Kong? Is "one country, two systems"
really feasible? In the end, can
it be applied to the "Taiwan Plan"? At the same time, US President Trump once again warned this week
that he is expecting to meeting with Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Japan,
otherwise he will impose more tariffs on all Chinese goods. Thus, is there a dilemma for Xi
Jinping's "meeting or not"?
Can the standoff of the trade war turn around? This program is to explore these topics.
