IFCSS: Why Do We Commemorate the "June 4th Massacre" Year After Year?

-- reported by Xiao Yu, Voice of America

Washington DC -

When the Tiananmen Democracy Movement broke out in 1989, 20-year-old Zheng Xuguang was a student at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the first commander of the temporary headquarters on Tiananmen Square.

On the evening of June 3, Zheng Xuguang saw a student injured by bullets near Xinhuamen.  His calf was shot, but it was not life threatening.

When the student was helped to get on the hospital bus, Zheng Xuguang remembered that he smiled and said with a heroic spirit: "I didn't expect it to be a real bullet."

On the evening of Saturday (June 1), US Eastern Time, Zheng Xuguang recalled this past event at a commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the June 4th Massacre in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC, USA.

This former student leader, who was wanted by the Communist authorities after the "June 4th" crackdown, said that the students did not know that the Chinese government could use violence without hesitation against all those who challenged its authority.

"What we didn't understand when we were 20 years old, we should understand when we are 50," he said.  "As long as the Communist Party is still ruling with violence, it is a threat to the whole world."

Dr. Murray Bessette, director of academic programs at the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, said at the commemorative event: "The Chinese Communist Party is directly responsible for everything that happened on that sad day."

He pointed to the five-star red flag flying behind in the Chinese Embassy and said that the Communist Party clearly knew that they should be responsible.  They are afraid of the truth.

"If they are not afraid, they would celebrate this day as a day to defeat the enemy," he said. "On the contrary, they tried to erase the incident from world history."

About a hundred people attended the commemorative event hosted by IFCSS.  This is the 30th consecutive year that the organization held the commemoration observing "the June 4th Massacre".

"We are all witnesses, survivors and rebels of that Holocaust," said Chen Chuangchuang, an IFCSS council member.

He said that as more and more Chinese people forget the "June 4th Massacre", there are still a small group of people overseas to commemorate year after year.

Chen Chuangchuang said that in 1989, two massacres occurred in China.  One was the massacre of the human lives, and the other was the cover-up of the truth by the autocratic regime and the massacres of the spirit.  To commemorate the "June 4th Massacre", in addition to bearing in mind the massacre itself, it is also to prevent the occurrence of the next "June 4th Massacre".

"Through the "June 4 massacre", the ruling party saw great benefits for themselves that could last for at least 30 years; so when the next unavoidable, oversized protest takes place, can you imagine that the rulers would not order the shooting again?" he asked.

You Weijie, the leader of the Tiananmen mother group who could not be present, sent a recorded audio to thank IFCSS, which has accompanied this suffering group for 30 years.

She said: "The tragedy of the "June 4 Massacre" is a permanent scar in the hearts of each of us.  I think that through our joint efforts, this tragedy will eventually see a fair and justice day in China."

IFCSS is an autonomous organization of Chinese students and scholars in the United States.  Its goal is to achieve democratization in China.  This year is the 30th year of the founding of this organization.
