Wei Jingsheng: Keynote Speaker at the Potomac Cultural Salon

On September 8, 2019, Wei Jingsheng was invited to give a keynote speech at the Potomac Cultural Salon, on the topic of "Analysis of the Situation and Prospects in China."  Later, he answered questions from the audience.  About 30 people participated the event.  More than half of them also joined the dinner with Mr. Wei.

The following are the questions answered by Mr. Wei at the Potomac Culture Salon:

1. Forty years ago, you proposed the political idea of "the Fifth Modernization -- Democracy" in China.  Looking back at the views of that time, what modifications would you have made; any change or addition?

2. The Sino-US trade war is in full swing.  What judgment do you have on the two sides in this fierce battle?  What will be the final outcome?  And what will be the impacts on Trump and Xi Jinping?

3. Is there for sure an inevitable battle between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait?

4. What are the possible solutions to solve the crisis in Hong Kong?

5. In East Asia, Japan and South Korea have experienced unhappiness between each other.  How will this affect China?

6. Can Southeast Asian countries live in peace with China?  Can the Central and Western Asian countries (the countries on the Belt and Road Initiative) get along with China peacefully?

7. Can Xi Jinping handle various domestic and international crises?  If not, what alternatives does the Communist regime have?

8. What will the foreseeable future in China look like?  What can we who love and care about China do in this big revolution of the century?

  __  __  __

The following is a description of the event held by the Potomac Cultural Salon:

It has only been 7 years since Xi Jinping came to power at the end of 2012.  However, China has already entered an eventful troublesome autumn.

This includes not only anti-corruption to power grabs, constitutional change to terminate "the term limit" for Xi, and the "seven points decree of what one is not allowed to speak of", but also the "Belt and Road Initiative", the rise of "the great power of China", Xi Jinping's aggressiveness in his fight for hegemony against the United States, until ultimately to the export of the Communist system in China to the whole world.

Yet, a black swan has shown up as the protests against the "extradition bill" in Hong Kong, and a gray rhino as the China-US trade war.  The shortcomings under the aura of China's miracle are exposed, which has worsened China's already weak economy, with various contradictions emerged.  The withdrawal of foreign investment, landslide of foreign trade, sluggish domestic demand, sharp drop of local investment, and the expectation of a outbreak of the unemployment tide at any time, indicates the final time limit for solving problems is getting ever closer.

The Communist regime in China has once again encountered a "ruling crisis" since the June 4 Massacre in 1989.

How are we to view the current political, economic, and diplomatic issues in China?  Can the Chinese Communist regime survive the current crisis?  Where is the way out for China?

The Potomac Cultural Salon is honored to invite Mr. Wei Jingsheng, a famous exiled politician of China, to give a keynote speech at the salon, to share his observations and thoughts with the audience, and to give a logical interpretation of the status quo and future of China.  Wei Jingsheng is a well-known anti-communist, democracy promoter and social activist in China.  He published a large-character poster "The Fifth Modernization" to promote democracy on Beijing's Xidan Democracy Wall.  He was later imprisoned for counter-revolutionary crimes and conspiracy to subvert the government, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize many times while in prisons.  He was exiled to the United States after he was released from prison.  He is currently Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and Chairman of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.  In 1993, he shared the GLEITSMAN INTERNATIONAL ACTIVIST AWARD with the former South African President Nelson Mandela; in 1994 he won the Olof Palme Memorial Prize; in 1994 he won the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award; in 1996 he won Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament; in 1998, he won the National Endowment for Democracy Award.
