The Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Sixteenth Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award

December 5, 2019

Since 2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th.  In the last 15 years the awarding of this prize has had reverberations around the world.  Those people persisting in the fight in China, who are at any moment in life-threatening danger, have thus been encouraged and consoled.

As can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese Democracy.  Nominating someone in and of itself is a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those unknown, untiring democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and fortune.  We have great respect for their strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made.  For this year, we received almost ten excellent recommendations from friends inside of China and aboard, and selected three of the outstanding ones as our finalists for the year.

In the past few years since Xi Jinping took over power, especially the last two years, there have been dramatic changes in the domestic issues and foreign affairs in China.  Since Xi Jinping ended the term limits, he has become even more bold and outrageous.  Not only does he suppress the people politically, he also exploits the people economically. The result has been a rapid deterioration in China both economically and socially to the degree that not only the average people find surviving difficult, even the officials and businessmen are in danger.  Internationally, the Communist regime in China has been expanding aggressively globally, in the name of "one belt, one road", and also in the gesture to continue its trade war with the USA to the degree that the whole world would feel the shock and be without peace.  It is in this atmosphere that the government of Hong Kong that is loyal to the Communist regime in Mainland China pushed the "extradition bill" that encountered such determined opposition from the people of Hong Kong who have already felt their gradual loss of freedom since Hong Kong was turnover to China in 1997.  From the kidnapping case of Causeway Bay Books Bookstore, the people of Hong Kong could feel the nature of the Communist regime that does not care about rule of law.  From the concentration camps in Xinjiang built by the Communist regime, they could associate the result with the genocide against the Jewish people by the Nazis.  The people of Hong Kong made a thunderously loud voice to demand freedom and democracy for themselves!

Five years ago, several hundred thousands of Hong Kong people went to the streets to call for "genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong", demanding a true democratic election and true autonomy.  This year, millions of Hong Kong people have continuously demonstrated on the streets for several months against the violent attacks of the police and up to ten thousand bombs of tear gas, etc.  As they collectively made the roaring protest, the world has heard their protests.  With the strategy of "be water," the protests by people of Hong Kong have turned themselves into inspirational leaders of the opposed, especially being a shining example for the Chinese in Mainland to learn from and want to stand with.  Among these inspirational leaders, our awardee this year is a noble man who strived for years yet kept low profile.  He has been the strong center who stood tall against the violent current, thus winning respect from the others.  He is an extraordinary leader of the unyielding people of Hong Kong, an outstanding representative to a group that truly treasures freedom and democracy.

Today, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation "Wei Jingsheng Democracy Champion Prize" judging committee announces the 16th annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" awardee to be Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong.  He was nominated by Ms. Ann Noonan, an American who has cared and strived for Chinese democracy and human rights for years.  The other two nominees who made the list of finalists are Mr. Lv Gengsong and Mr. Zi Su.  We also want to take this opportunity to salute these two excellent candidates, as well as the other nominees.  Meanwhile, we would like to express our gratitude to the friends who joined to nominate these nominees.

Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun was born in Shanghai on January 13, 1932 and later moved to Hong Kong.  He was ordained in 1961, served as the sixth Bishop of Hong Kong.  He was made a cardinal in 2006.

Cardinal Joseph Zen has been outspoken on issues regarding human rights, political freedom, and religious liberty.  He has always firmly supported the Hong Kong democratic movement and strongly opposed the Communist interference in the missionary activities and religious freedom of the church.  He campaigned against legislation in Article 23 of the Basic Law, calling on people "don't be willful slaves of power."  Cardinal Zen also wrote articles critical of the Chinese Communist regime interfering in Hong Kong's religious affairs and persecuting clerics in Mainland China.  He pointed out: "China has no civil liberties and therefore no religious liberties.  Poor bishops are treated like slaves."  For the true Catholic followers in China, he had plead to the Popes many times, telling them the actual situation in China on behalf of the Catholics in China.  Although in his 80's, Cardinal Zen has not only supported the Hong Kong people in fighting for genuine universal suffrage in 2014, but also once again called on everyone to support Hong Kong people this year against the "extradition bill".  He devoted his whole life to caring for Catholics in China, and made the most sincere appeal for the well-being of the general public, with most practical actions.

Our award this year to Cardinal Zen is also an award to the people of Hong Kong who refused to bow down their noble heads.  As Chinese from Mainland China, we also want to take this opportunity to express our respect and support to the righteous struggle of the Hong Kong people, as well as to express our desire to have freedom and democracy all over China.  On this 30th anniversary of the bloody suppression of the 1989 democracy movement in China, on this 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in East Europe, we have never forgotten that it was people of Hong Kong who held large scale June 4 commemorations activities in Hong Kong every year in the past 30 years as their way to support the people in Mainland China.  We also are of clear mind about the striving contrast of the changes in China and East Europe in the past 30 years, due to the differences of "different timings, different places, and different people", of which an important element of the "different people" was Pope John II.  Pope John II inspired and influenced many people with his strong stand of anti-Communism in speeches and actions.  This is extremely remarkable and necessary in the world, especially in current China where so many people have lost faith and only care about material life.  In the past decades, Cardinal Joseph Zen has been a voice for the people of Hong Kong and Mainland China with clear mind.  He stood with these people at all times.  In particular, he has stood with the Catholics in China all the time.  He has consistently and insistently been a loud voice for the Catholics in Mainland China, despite pressures from all angles.  So far, there is no person that has reached to his effort and credit in this regard.  We believe that with joined effort, his striving will not be wasted, just as our goal should be reached eventually.  Cardinal Zen, we stood with you, just as we stood with people of Hong Kong!

This year's award money totaled $3,300.  Those who donated money are donating their passion and belief in Chinese democracy.  For this passion we want to express our deepest gratitude.  Again, we also want to express our appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees for our 15th annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize," including the nominators who are the laureates and nominees themselves of the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" from previous years.  We thank all of you for your support and encouragement.
