50 Groups from All Over the World Gathered Online to Commemorate the June 4th Massacre and Look Forward to the Democratization progress in China

-- by Yu Zhou, Voice of America

June 5, 2020 06:38

Los Angeles -

On the morning of June 4th, Beijing time, about 50 democratic advocacy organizations around the world held online commemorative activities, not only to commemorate the 31st anniversary of June 4th Massacre in Beijing in 1989, but also to look forward to the opportunities encountered for democratization in China.

Hundreds of people participated in this global Internet conference.  Participants believed that the crisis of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong, the out of control new coronavirus, and the U.S.-China trade war exposing the Chinese Communist regime's infiltration of the West are leading to 2020 becoming a turning point in China's democratic process.

Xiong Yan, a former US military priest, said in the prayer for the conference: "Pray for people who are pursuing freedom, and may God bless them, help them, support them...please ask God to pity us, stop chaos, and bring us peace... "

US Congressman Chris Smith, who has long criticized the human rights situation in the People's Republic of China, delivered a speech at the conference, stating, "After the June 4th Massacre, the West behaved weakly.  It shows that if you show weakness and prostrate to the autocracy, they become even worse...  we will remember those souls who died of injustice, and we will also remember those who survived the prison and were persecuted for life...  The Chinese Communist regime has denied the massacre in Tiananmen Square until today...  I believe that both parties in the United States thought that the Communist regime would change from a brutal authoritarian regime to a benevolent political party as long as they strengthened trade with China.  However, this expectation did not become a reality.  Nowadays, Xi Jinping inherits the tradition of the June 4 Massacre on Tiananment every day.  Martyrs of June 4 pointed out a way, yet it is a pity that the Communist regime chose another way.  Whether it's the crisis in Hong Kong, the plight of the Uyghurs, or the suppression of religious freedom, and the uncontrolled spread of the new coronavirus, they are all the work of the Chinese Communist regime.  What a heroic action for you hold this conference tonight.  We will give you the glory of a brand new China..."

US Senator Marco Antonio Rubio also delivered a speech at the conference: "Remembering history is important.  We want to let future generations know what had happened in the Tiananmen Square and let people know its importance.  Fast forward from 1989 to Today in 2020, the Communist regime is depriving Hong Kong of its freedom and trying to cannibalize the values ??of the free world.  We will not tolerate this."

In addition, Rubio, as the co-chairman of CECC (Congressional-Executive Commission on China)  and the CECC chairman, Representative McGovern, also issued a statement during the conference.  Their statement stated that 31 years ago, "the Chinese Communist Party dispersed these peaceful protesters by using military force in Tiananmen Square, crushing their peaceful demands for rights and reform...  We call on the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to provide a full public accounting of those killed and missing, and to allow open discussion and study of the events surrounding June 4, 1989. "

The statement also included that the United States strongly supports all prisoners of conscience and calls for their unconditional release; the United States supports Tibet, Uyghurs, Hong Kong, Chinese lawyers who seek justice, and religious groups pursuing freedom of faith.

David Kilgour, a former Canadian cabinet member and democracy activist who is concerned about human rights in China, said: "It is well known that 31 years ago, the Chinese Communist government used tanks to crush the longest contemporary democratic protest in China, which had a profound impact on China and the world...  We must remember the bloody pictures of that year, and use these as a driving force to promote Chinese democracy and human rights into a new era, allowing everyone, including Falun Gong practitioners, Xinjiang Uyghurs, and Hong Kong people, etc. to get rid of the control by Xi Jinping who is making a 'Great Leap Backwards'."

Participants of the conference expressed their views around 1989 from various fields such as history, religion, and human rights.

A statement issued by Wei Jingsheng, president of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation and chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, said: " Over the past 31 years, the situation in China has changed a lot.  The economy has developed, per capita income has increased, and a small number of people have become wealthy.  Many friends who return to China find that people around them are satisfied because they are rich.  They don't care about democracy and freedom, and even support the Chinese Communist Party.  This situation has made many feel that the blood of the martyrs of June 4th Massacre had been wasted and they have lost confidence in Chinese democracy and even the Chinese people.  Is that true?... Even people who already have money still need legal protection, human dignity and personal freedom...   these ideals are everyone's immediate interest.  Even after one hundred years, even one thousand years, human nature determines that these ideals will continue to be pursued from generation to generation, and will be realized eventually..."

Pastor Bob Fu of ChinaAid, said: "31 years ago, I sat with tens of thousands of students and people in Tiananmen Square to protest peacefully, calling for more democracy and freedom, and respect for human rights and the rule of law.  But the Communist regime deployed tanks and used machine guns to suppress us, killing hundreds and thousands of students and the masses...  As we continue to commemorate the June 4 Massacre of 1989, I call on all of us to continue to fight for freedom.  This is the universal value of the world.  The Mainland Chinese, people of Hong Kong, Xinjiang people, Tibetans, and people of various religions, and even atheists deserve freeom...  The Communist regime in China is a regime of lies that has lost all its credibility. "

Journalist, writer, poet, and vice-chair of the Federation for a Democratic China, Sheng Xue expressed her sorrow and hope with a poem: "The right to commemorate June 4th was deprived, and justice could not be carried out; Xinjiang concentration camps and organ harvesting of the Falun Gong practitioners, once were all ignored by the world; However, when the Communist regime violates Hong Kong, the people there fought with their lives and woke up the international community..."

Economist Xia Yeliang said, "Those who experienced the 1989 democracy movement are getting older.  We should seize the time and take the establishment of the June 4th Museum as a top priority.  We can consider relocating the small museum that is already in Hong Kong to Taiwan or the United States.  We need to work hard In order to collect all kinds of materials from the June 4th tragedy.  I myself am willing to participate in it.  Mr. Wu Renhua has been conducting systematic research and has achieved excellent results, especially the investigation and understanding of the Tiananmen Tank Forces.  The 'Tiananmen Mothers' has also done a lot of work after extensive and difficult searching and contacts.  These are examples that we can follow."

Michael Horowitz, legal director of the Budget Office of the White House under President Reagan and president of the 21st Century Initiative, said enthusiastically: "People have always believed that history is one step at a time, with the last step to be success.  But it's not right.  History was created by those of you who have been crying out but always feel that no one has heard, and therefore feel lonely.  As long as you keep the candle flashing the flame, there will be a day when everything will suddenly become an inevitable fact.  The former Soviet Union fell down like this, and almost all revolutions produced results in this way.  When everything happened, the pushers were people like you.  President Reagan once said, we looked as weak, divisive, trivial, while totalitarian looks unified, powerful, and invincible, but don't be fooled by such appearances...  Democracy is powerful, and dictatorship is weak despite its strong look outside..."

Horowitz said that on May 27th a few days ago, US Secretary of State Pompeo issued a statement saying that the United States will not tolerate any government blockade of the Internet, and the United States will strive to protect online freedom at all times.  This shows that the liberation of the Internet in China and other countries has become the national policy of the United States; this is the result of everyone working together for ten years; the firewall is about to be overthrown; the speed and intensity of all these efforts will far exceed our imagination.

Chen Liqun, vice chairman of the China Democracy Party National Committee, and Chen Weiming, chairman of the China Democracy Party in Los Angeles, were also invited to give speeches at the conference.

The "Global Conference Commemorating the 31st Anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre" was co-sponsored by the June 4th Archives, China Aid Association, China Democracy & Human Rights Alliance, Democratic Education Foundation, China Democracy Party National Committee, Federation for Democratic China in the USA, Liberty Sculpture Park, and the Wei Jingsheng Foundation.

Political activists, human rights activists, democracy activists and anti-Communist volunteers from the United States, Canada, France, Finland, Australia and other places attended the conference.
